Cutting your dogs tail off

Just got two of my hounds docked cost me 400 for both, trialed them 3 days later and my 13 inch male took his first ribbon! It was too uncomfortable for him to run with a beat up tail, this is not cruelty just another way to keep an active running dog healthy.

Man, now reading a proper description of it, it sounds even worse.

I know raccoon trapping sometimes they're feet will become so numb that they can chew them off so they can pull out, but to the point where a tail would fall off? Sounds terrible. Evidently it works without much discomfort though.

Who said that they didn't have to force their dogs to do this? That's an odd claim! I mean, they can't exactly volunteer, unless your dogs are WAY smarter than mine!

Thank you for your advice. It is easy to tell the true hunter and sportsman for the weekend warrior. I am going to band my females tail because I see the condition she get in after a good days hunt. Thanks for the knowledge of pulling the hair back so it will lap over the docked tail.
I just bought a male form the weedeater bloodline. Maybe he can cut the weeds for the other hounds and they won't have the problem.( ha ha )

can you still run them while the band is on?

MIne were run some during the banding process. One was in heat and the other on a rest after 6 days a week for 3 months, so the timing was good on that. We banded one on a buddy's dog and he ran him the whole time, about three weeks in, while running, it fell off. He looks good and is doing great!!

I have an ointment I found that has a benzocaine(numbing agent) in it to put on after the tail falls off, it works really well. I picked it up at a higher end pet supply store here locally. Good luck!!

Note: I sprayed around the band with some alcohol and peroxide mixture every other day to help cut down on chances of infection. This kept the site nice and pink and when the tail tip came off it was like a surgical removal. Healed over in a few days and now they look great! I did put vaseline on the area about every time I ran them for the next couple weeks. Helped keep it from getting raw again.

I run them with the band on. It is obvious right away how much better they feel with the tail numbed. I have seen the end come off as early as 10 days and never had them worry about it again

i had a dog her tail was so bad it fell off in 4 days. healed up nicely. no problem anymore.

I'd like to see this done, it sounds so simple and painless. I can't imagine a tail just falling off and it not being awful, but I certainly don't know everything. If you can have your dog's tail banded and have her out hunting, it's obviously not painful (or very much, anyway, though I've seen injured dogs willing to run all day if only given the option).

I put bands on 4 of mine this summer and it went great,just put the band just below where the tail was getting beat up and tried to put it in a notch in the tail.Don't know what happen but on one the tail come off in 2 days,two of the others took about a week and the last one took about 2 weeks.Several of these dogs would beat there tails up really bad,to the point any break in the action and you would find them sitting and licking,to me that had to be much more painful than the week or so the band was on.But they never acted like the band was much of a bother.Ive been running them really hard lately getting the ready for season and no tail issues this year.
