Selling A Pup
Over the years i've sold a few pup's after they were weened at 6 weeks old and had their first shots to be sold at 8 weeks old for a certain price. Recently i raised a litter and because in the past of people telling me they want a pup at 8 weeks old and then never hearing from them again i decided to require a deposit to hold a pup till 8 weeks old. The problem now is after all the deposits have come in people are telling me when they will come to get their pup and it's two and three weeks after they are 8 weeks old. As everyone knows the longer you keep them the more expence you put into them like 2nd shots and de-worming. I like to accomidate people but i don't like to be taken advantage of. How would you people that have the experience handle this ?
Re: Selling A Pup
When advertising price him at 8 weeks 9 weeks 10 weeks if not picked up on time deposit non-refundable and dog/pup goes back up for sale.

Re: Selling A Pup
I have seen on other breeders site they charge additional if not pickup on time . I think it's good to do that it weeds out tire kicker .

When people contact me for a pup and leave a deposit i ask when is the predicted time frame they plan to pick the pup up. once we settle on a day give or take, i tell them i can keep the pup longer if needed but i will be keeping the pup up to date on shots, etc and will cost (XX) extra for every week left past there date. I also ask them to contact me the week before (when the pups are 7 weeks) for an update on their schedule. it has worked well for me and i have had happy returning customers.

Been there too , so I try hard to work with everyone but now I tell them they got 2 weeks from when I call and if they don't show then they forfit the deposit and pups goes to the next person on the list . Some will put U off for ever and thays just not right . I try to treat them as I want to be treated .

Re: Selling A Pup
I don't have alot of experience but this is how I have done it. I advertise the pups at a young age or before they are born. I let everyone know that the pups will be ready to pick up at 8 weeks old no later and that a $50 deposit is required to hold a pup. From the get go they know they are ready at 8 weeks old so when they make their deposits at 2 weeks old or before they are born they have 6 to 8 weeks to figure out a day to pick them up. If 8 weeks comes and goes then they are sh%# out of luck. I have given 1 extra week but no more. If you can't figure out a day to pick up your pup with 8 weeks to figure it out then you are not smart enough to own a pup in my book. After that their $50 dollars stays with me and I will advertise them again. It can get really aggravating selling pups but for the most part people pick their pups up in time. Some people are just blowing hot air. Give them an inch and they will take a mile. Just my opinion.

you may look into a kennel boarding fee, so many dollars per day for every day the pup has to stay into your kennel extra, but be sure you let them know of this before hand and it sure will make them be a bit more responsive to coming on time if they know they'll have to pay extra per day for you keeping there pup.

Re: Selling A Pup
I think these guys are right. Get the deposit with the understanding they are to pick the pup up at 8 weeks. If they are late then it is up to you whether or not to give them more time or whether you just keep the deposit and sell the pup to the next person on the list. Of course this should be explained in very explicit terms up front and if it wasn't this time around then just be reasonable and do what you think is fair. But go into it the next time around with all of it being explained up front......again if you didn't do that this time around.
I guess we should ask, what did you tell them were your expectations when they gave you the deposit?

Re: Selling A Pup
Blaster, i did say the pups were to be picked up at 8 weeks old in the original add. I didn't go into detail about the deposit would be forfeited but since these post i am in the process of emailing each person explaining to them after 8 weeks if they still want their pup an editional five dollars a day will be required to cover puppy chow feed, up todate de-worming and 2nd round of shots. Also if they decide after 8 weeks they don't want the pup their deposit will be forfeited. The pup's are 7 weeks old yesterday. I have always in the past waited till my pups were 8 weeks old before advertising them forsale but by doing this you have to go through people calling you promising to come if you hold a pup and then not showing up. This happened this past weekend with the last pup in the litter that don't have a deposit on it. This guy (I have his name & number on my phone ID list) calles me up Sat. morning said he was from Alabama on vacation in Gattlinburg TN. He said he saw my pup's on one of the beagle boards and if i would hold it till Monday morning when he started back home he would come by, pay me and pick the pup up. Well this beagle board troll never showed up. I have learned one thing, always get a deposit, now the next thing i'm learning is to set a definate time limit.
