Here we go again!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Last week, we gave Gov. McCrory the benefit of the doubt. We said he “seemed” to be siding with the animal rights radicals. This week, there is no doubt! He accepted an award from HSUS on behalf of his wife and announced he wants to resurrect the Puppy Mill Bill. Further, Gov. McCrory seeks to move the Animal Welfare Section from the NC Dept. of Agriculture to the NC Dept. of Public Safety. What does this mean? He wants to take it away from veterinarians and give it to guys with guns. Why?
Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler and the NC Board of Agriculture have established sensible standards for the care of animals at animal shelters, boarding kennels, pet shops, public auctions, etc. There are reasonable regulations for the issuance of licenses. There are inspections, regulations for the welfare and treatment of animals, proper certification for euthanasia technicians, minimum holding periods for shelter animals, and penalties and fines for non-compliance of these rules. But reasonable regulations and veterinarians operating within the law will never satisfy animal rights radicals.
These radicals, including Gov, McCrory’s wife Ann, now want to remove the Animal Welfare Section to the NC Dept. of Public Safety. Why? The answer is because Gov. McCrory can hand-pick a person to run the Section if it is in the Dept. of Public Safety. If the Animal Welfare Section comes under his control (and under the influence of his wife) they will pack it with animal rights radicals. Then will begin their major push to rewrite rules to institutionalize the radical animal rights agenda in North Carolina government. Gov. McCrory did not campaign on this, but he is certainly urging the most radical animal rights agenda of any governor in the history of North Carolina. This is bad news for dog owners and hunters in NC. It is bad news for anyone who owns a pack of dogs in NC.
We already have seen examples of intrusive local animal control officers influenced by the animal rights agenda. Remember the horror stories of excessive regulation coming out of Orange County? We do not need swat teams inspecting our dog kennels. Understand that animal rights radicals want to regulate how much you feed, water, and exercise your dogs. They want to force you to heat and air condition your kennels. Now, they want to enforce their excessive and unreasonable regulations at gun point. Of course, their ultimate goal is to regulate dog breeders out of existence.
Gov. McCrory cannot insert animal rights radicals into the Dept. of Agriculture because it remains under the control of Ag. Commissioner Steve Troxler, who is a good man, elected by the voters of NC.
So how does the Governor propose to introduce this radical animal rights agenda into the Animal Welfare Section? He is threatening to cut the budget of the Dept. of Agriculture. The Governor will point out that if the Animal Welfare Section is moved to Public Safety, then this “reduction” will satisfy the necessary budget cut. Welcome to politics in Raleigh.
Of course, all of this will have to be approved by the Legislature, including the NC Senate, where the budget will be first considered this year.
This is where you, the Citizen, can help. Let your voice be heard in Raleigh!
