I went hunting with a guy yesterday that lives near me. We had never met in person. Exchanged e-mails a few times and decided to hunt together yesterday. He is just getting into beagling and has a nice 10 month old female. We were chatting while we were hunting. I asked if he planned on trialing. He said "No, From what I have read on the internet in the forums there is way to much politics, bickering and bashing at trials and about trials" .I told him 90% of the people out there trialing are good people. Most go for the same reason as I do. To watch different hounds run and compare my hound to other hounds. Also to meet people that share our same passion, Beagling. The statement he made really struck me yesterday. We need to remember that the pen is mightier than the sword.
just my 2 cents

Mr. Piacentine, You're right! I know a lot of good young men I have met in trialing, but the crop is dwindling as far as youths participating. I know a lot of trialers bring the kids with them just trying to get them involved but it seems like they stray away and would rather play ball, play video games, watch a movie or go to a friends house. Lots of things for kids to do now days. I am glad that many of clubs in all hunting formats have tried keeping the youth in mind. Anything to motivate young people to get interested.crewchf wrote:Randy hunting is down everywhere in the country. I've been running Paulding forrest all season here in Ga,, ain;t seen the first small game hunter yet, never mind beaglers!!!! A whole bunch of yuggins out there ain't into this like some of us are. To Busy paying for houses, cars, boats and whatever else society tells them they need to look cool in this world of ours. Its a shame!!!

Brian, I always hated seeing people get picked up. I think thats one reason the 3 amigos got down on me, becuase I rarely picked up a dog. I think they thought I was doing this intentionally, but I swear I wasnt, if a dog needed picked up for being crazy I would pick em up but if they want me to run my guts out for an hour and spend all that time looking for minuses instead of looking at the good the other dogs are doing, they had the wrong man. I was in trials to watch dogs run, not seeing how many I can pick up. I understand some dogs have to be picked up, but sometimes the minuses were ridiculous.
Redtick and Brian, I can honestly say I was never cheated in PP that was blatant and intentional, that I know of. I ran a lot of casts and I can remember one time when I was sent to the truck real early because my dog was "slipping" the line.....she wasnt sneaking, she was just flat out smoking!! But the judge and I had judged together the cast before that and had a disagreement, in that cast he wanted me to minus a dog for slipping the line, I knew the dog and could see the dog and the dog wasnt slipping the line....it was working a check right and fast.......it would return to point of loss, check it quickly and move out to about 5' make a circle and go to 8-10' and if that didnt work it would go to 15' but by gosh it would hit the line and was gone again. This dog ran the rabbit almost the entire cast and that judge that was running along screaming I needed to minus him instead of giving a check. SO when my dog did get picked up for slipping when he judged later, I knew she hadnt, and he didnt cheat me.............HE JUST DIDNT KNOW ANY BETTER! Things like that happened some. But with that said, I did see people get cheated. Them deals where joe blow picks up joe schmoes dog so when joe schmoe judged he picked up joe blows dog....I never seen a need in cheating someone or for someone.
Mike, You are correct. Most people in trialing are great people just coming to enjoy the people and the feeling of being around people who love what we all love, beagling. I have met some super people in beagles. I would never discourage anyone from going to a trial. Just go have fun, run em all and enjoy it, BUT dont ever get sucked into it heavy. WHen they ask you to judge say NO, when they ask you to help with the club say NO, when they nominate you to do something RESPECTFULLY SAY NO, when they need you to help start new clubs say NO, when they ask you to do anything other than register a dog, pay an entry and run a dog, say NO! lol So I got a little carried away but what I was trying to say is if you just go to trials with an open mind to just go run dogs and have a good time and expect to lose...you will enjoy yourself. ONE THING I WOULD STRONGLY ENCOURAGE IS IF YOU DO TRIAL, DONT ALLOW OTHER PEOPLE TO TELL YOU HOW BAD A JUDGE WAS OR HOW THEY GOT CHEATED, NICELY TELL THEM TO "FILE A PROTEST WITH THE MOH, THAT YOU DONT WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT"......MDH68 wrote:I asked if he planned on trialing. Hi Randy,,, CUT THE MR STUFF!!! You know when me and Donna bring the beagles into petsmart it always amazz's us how the kids freak out over them. They'll let you know right quick that they are rabbit dogs ain't they Mr. I believe we can get this sport alive and well again, beagles are very popular everywhere. # 3 in the country I think the AKC says. I'm trying to get a few folks who's beagles ain't never seen thorns into the woods with us. Let em see how much fun this is and let the beagles give the enjoyment it was bred to do. God I love this sport and many will agree I hope. Take care and we were up your way last week,,, cold and colder for this Ga boy and girl!!!!

Hey Rich, If you all ever come up this way again feel free to give me a yell and we will go run some dogs! Thats the thing I miss most about trialing, not seeing people I consider good friends.
As for the beagles, I know what you mean. My oldest daughter is a junior in high school and her friends are always coming over to see our dogs, I have even given a few to the local kids who live on farms. ANything to get them involved.
On the same note, my nephew just moved up here from Virginia, he is 7 years old and has never had a daddy around. He was 3-4 when my dad passed away(whom he lived with) and he lived 450 miles from me so he hasnt been around men much. We had him out here staying for the weekend a few weeks back and I tried getting him to go run dogs, he was dead set against it! He said he was scared of dogs. He wanted to play his X Box!! I told him he wasnt playing no X Box that he was going to run dogs, he threw a fit, I almost made him go anyway but I gave in and rather than have him ruin a good time I just forgot it and let him have his X Box game! I was mad. I was just the opposite when I was his age, I would throw a fit if I didnt get to go! I quit baseball so I could fish of a spring and summer, quit football so I could deer hunt in the fall, wouldnt wrestle because I liked trapping, and the family hasnt had a vacation in 5 years because we have beagles to tend to daily, lol. I have 2 daughters and they like fishing and the dogs. Never had to deal with one not wanting to go
What do you do with a boy like this.....should I keep the pressure on him, make him go or just give him his space????
Swing.......Momma says I'm blunt as a daggone spoon, lol!
Take care all,
Randy

champions
Do you think since there are alot more 10-15 dog open hunts that its easier to put the champion status on a fair or should I say less than outstanding dog? I know it still takes a good dog to get that win but it seems like it would be easier to win a 10 dog hunt than a 30-40 dog hunt. It used to be the norm to be 25+ at all the hunts I went to until here in the last year or so. I've definatly seen the numbers go down. One or two hunts once in awhile that draw numbers isn't what you were asking I think but more an average overall. Might depend on the region also as to the turn out.

WOW! Some of you guys are real hard hitters! LOL As a person new to this forum, and one who is looking forward to attending my FIRST EVER beagle trial in Pierson, MI on Feb. 19th as a spectator, because I don't own any good dogs yet. I have to say I'm surprised to hear about all these corruption, favoritism, and back-biting charges that seem to go on at these events! I certainly will keep my eyes and ears open in consideration of when I do get some hounds if I'd even want to take part in such an event. I'm glad to see that someone is willing to hang out the dirty laundry! It is enlightening and educational to someone like myself who knows nothing about dog trials and how they're run. There for a while I thought beagle people were all one happy and honest family. Everyone has great dogs, no dog purchase deals go sour! No buying cautions given out.
It's unlike my large format photography forum where if you're a photography equipment supplier, and you bait and switch, mis-represent, or refuse to make good on a defective product, your name goes on the seller ratings site! Believe me, your either shamed into making good or you've just sold your last piece of equipment. There's no messing around there boys! It's there for the world to see! So in a way it's good to hang out the dirty wash, it tends to keep those that think their honest, really honest and it's a way for a group to police their own. No this is a good thing! Continue on please, this is informative.
