For years I've collected old books on all kinds of hunting hounds from big game, coon hounds, fox hounds and the beagles. Some of my better beagle finds are "Training The Rabbit Hound" by Carl E.Smith 1926 with some really nice photos of early Patch hounds."The New Complete Beagle" 1956 by Henry J.Colombo,Lew Madden,Owen M. Payne,A.D.Holcombe and Morgan Wing Jr."This Is The Beagle"1955 by Dr. George D. Whitney D.V.M.,"Breeding A Strain Of Better Beagles" [the Little Ireland story ]1991 by Tom and Velta Dornin,"The Hunting Beagle Handbook"1992 by Jerry O'Connor and of course "A Patchwork Wilderness by Willett Randall.

Say, you better keep an Eye on that book, that A.D.Holcombe wrote, and that one that Mr. Randel wrote is mighty good reading, about those white and black spotted "Patch" hound up there in those N.Y. Mountains.. I can't spell those rugged mountains name that he writes, where Beaver Meadows, was located and he ran those big rabbits. Was over 100 years ago !!

Hey Daddy Rabbit
By any chance is that author A.D. Holcombe yourself or any kin to you?
I believe I might have met you and one or two of your sons at a trial at the Little Mud Creek Beagle Club in Bailyton,Alabama in 1995 or 1996 ?

Yes, that was me and both of them boys was with me, we ran the ARHA P.P. trials real hard back in the mid 90's~
We WAS, going after that Sunshine Mills, Sportsman's Pride Hound Of The year contest! Ol Everett Morgan, had some mighty good business deals set up with at Feed Company, where as they would pay $1,000 in cash and 1,000 pounds of that Dog feed to the First Place Hound and the second place was $500 and 500 pounds of feed !!
First year they ran it my big male, Daddy Rabbit's King won the first place money and my little red female Squeel won the second place money and feed, in the Open class !
"Squeel" Was a very young hound the first year less, than a year old, so I Did Not Certify, her as a Fld Ch. just ran her the next year in the Open Class and that little red female, sure did have some good luck that second, year as she won the HOTY and the US P.P. Championship in 92.
She went on to certify as a Gr.Fld.Ch. and went in the ARHA Hall Of Fame, so did king..
The boys were nicked name, "Snake" and "Rabbit" they was always with me and we traveled, all over the USA attending the trials ever week end, meet some mighty find folks and we sure did enjoy the competition events.. I had bad luck in 1997, when the two boys were both in an auto accident and the oldest son,, "snake" was killed ! the other son was broke up but he got over that accident, but unfortunately he was also in another accident in 2014, and was killed, leaving his wife and two children
Mighty hard loosing them boys,, due to my age don't get out on the big roads any more, but still breed and raise these little red hounds, only Gun Hunt now days.
Keep Looking UP!
