RabbitFevers daughter in critical condition..

Post by BuschBound »

MADISON, Wis. -- A nine-year-old Woodruff girl who was injured when two trucks collided head-on in the Mercer area over the weekend is in critical condition at a hospital here.

Maria Caroselli, daughter of Tom and Louise Caroselli, is being treated for a serious head injury at the University of Wisconsin pediatric hospital.

"She spoke a couple of words yesterday," Tom Caroselli said Thursday. The girl had been in an induced coma. "She kind of came out of it yesterday," her father said. "She has a serious injury to the frontal lobe of the brain."

Caroselli, 40, of Woodruff, who operates Woodland Tree Service, was returning from participating in a beagle field trial near Hurley Saturday when the accident occurred around 7:15 p.m.

"I know most of the guys up there who participate in the beagle trials and we had a good time on Saturday. My daughter sure had a good time watching the dogs and talking with people at the trials. Then we stopped at the Bell Chalet in Hurley for supper before heading south. That's her favorite place to eat," Caroselli said.

The initial report received by the Iron County Sheriff's Department was that a man was trapped in a truck and a girl was bleeding from the head.

Deputies determined a vehicle driven by Danny DeRizzo, 27, of Junet Road, Ironwood, was northbound on U.S. 51 when he lost control on a curve south of Weber Road. DeRizzo's vehicle then collided head-on with Caroselli's truck.

Luckily, a friend who was riding with Caroselli and his daughter, Chris Linder, 30, of Sugar Camp, Wis., was not injured and was able to call in the accident on a cell phone, offering invaluable life-saving assistance, Caroselli said.

"It was pretty devastating," Caroselli said Thursday. "I was southbound on 51 when he lost control and starting spinning in 360-degree turns in my lane. I was only going about 35 or 40 miles an hour because it was kind of raining. Out of the blue, we saw the truck coming at us and I tried to get off the road, but we collided on the white line."

Caroselli was trapped in the truck and Mercer Fire Department members removed the door and steering column to free him from the wreckage. He said he sustained a shattered ankle and other injuries and was released from the hospital on Wednesday. "I'm OK," he said.

Mercer and Beacon ambulances responded and all three injured persons were initially transported to Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff. The Oma Volunteer Fire Department also responded.

"They said it was amazing anyone could walk away from the accident," Caroselli said.

Caroselli said he is devoted to his dogs. One of the seven beagles in back of the truck was killed in the accident.

Mrs. Caroselli was in Madison Thursday at her daughter's side, while her husband was at home in Woodruff, planning to go back to Madison today to join his family.

"The doctors have told us it's going to be a long recovery process for my daughter," Caroselli said.

Editor's note: A fund to cover Maria Caroselli's medical expenses has been set up through the First National Bank of Wisconsin's St. Germain branch, or at any of the other branches of the bank in the area.

Our prayers are with you. You have a big extended (beagling) family. If you need anything, give me a jingle.

Although I currently don't live in Wis anymore, I am always a cheesehead at heart!

Best of luck on a speedy recovery.
