There is nothing ridiculous about such a contract. Some people feel responsible for bringing a beagle into the world and want to try and insure as much as possible that the beagles they produce will live good lives. They also have a vested interest in not wanting their kennel name to show up in the pedigrees of breeding stock at puppy mills, or backyard breeders, either. Sure, there are plenty of breeders (and owners, for that matter) who treat beagles like they would old hamburger meat or used cars. That's why the shelters are loaded with beagles (and every other breed and mixed-breed, for that matter).

SouthernBeagles, my point is that the contract itself can influence someone to return a dog to you, whether or not you end up in court somewhere down the line. I think you will agree that if you sell a dog to someone with such a provision in the contract, they're more likely to return the dog to you than if it is not included in the contract. Furthermore, the contract is also essentially a weeding tool. People who aren't responsible or committed enough may be more hesitant to sign a contract and therefore wouldn't be buying a dog from you in the first place.

Anonymous, breeders who put such stipulations in contracts generally don't have many dogs returned because they're finding committed homes for the dogs. Yeah, that hamburger I ate last night came from a cow that someone bred and raised...to be slaughtered and eaten. Beagles are bred and raised solely to be companions and hunters. There's a world of difference between food stock animals and hunting/companion animals.
