a dogs name

Post by ant »

in all the magazines you see a dogs name like (i am pulling one out of the book) "Swamp Stomin Bad News Dan"

my question is:
1. would "swamp stomin" be the kennel name? and the dog name be "bad news dan"? or just "dan"?

i always wondered how they get there names

say i bought "swamp stomin bad news dan" from the owner, would the name stay the same and follow the dog?

thanks anthony

Sometimes folks will just name a dog with really no signifigance to the name. Then others will add prefix to a dog's name that will signify what kennel the dog came from, or what bloodline it is from, such as Flat Creek Blake, Black Creek Brownie, etc. Most of the time the owner will just call the dog "Brownie", etc.

The registered name will follow the dog all its life, as most registries will not allow name changes.

I name all the dogs that were raised at my kennel with the prefix "Mt. Mitchell", such as my little gyp Mt. Mitchell Sawdust. I jus call her Sawdust. That way if I ever sell the dog, I can keep up with it's progress if it is ever trialed, just by name recognition.

Hope this gives you some insight to dog names, but everyone does it a little different.

With AKC, once a hound is permenantly registered with a name it stays with them forever. It cannot be changed, regardless who ownership is transfered to. Can't comment on current rules of other registries.
Usually the "kennel" name is used before the "call" names on all hounds coming out of one kennel.
