Beagle won't go wide???

Post by luker »

My beagle is about 8 1/2 months old, and i took my out for the third time last weekend to a place i know there was rabbits. he would only go out about a 100 yrds. at most and he never jumped a rabbit, he was trailing the whole time and did get excited but never opened on anything, this is my first beagle. any suggestions would be helpful.

thank you, Luker

Keep taking him out and have patience. One of the biggest mistakes made in this fast pace world is that handlers /owners don't have patience some will start at 4 months some at 14 months but more often than not the one that starts at 4 months has had a lot of time in the brush . Two of the best dogs I've ever saw didn't start until about a year old. One of them belonged to me he was 11 months old when I got him and had never been ran , he started at 13 months and at 24 months he was good and at 30 months he was real good . Just keep taking him out there and enjoy watching him and coaching him along when he starts it will be a wonderful experience for you. Some of my best memoirs are of those first runs or jumps , some dogs will just really excell after that get their first jump and run. When he jumps that bunny and runs it be sure he knows how happy you are. Pet on him, tell him good job, good boy , it will make you both feel better. Thanks for the question, in replying some good memoirs have surfaced.

100 yards is farther than I want my adult dogs to search away from me. I dont mind a wide search but I want them to be within calling distance. I would say the pup is pretty bold if it searches out that far. Be patient it will open soon enough, just keep taking it.
