If you are going to do this yourself do it same day they are born or the next, what you want to do is make sure you cut it all off. that is why i us small round nose wire cutters. Have someone hold the pup if you can hold on to the dew claw you want to cut and pull away gently and snipe off. I have used fingnail clippers as well but i cant see what i am doing as well as i can with the real small round nose wire trimmers. i have never had one bleed but a drop or so ,momma will take care of them dont you worrie about that. ....wingpatch

I remove all my pups dewclaws when two to three days old. Once they get older you can't tell they were there. If they bleed put quick stop on them, and if you are in a bind you can use flour.

Yes it will grow over and you will not see it. I myself never cut the front ones off and would not advise anyone to do so.

I have done it on several litters. The last two times I use a pair of the dog nail clippers with a brand new blade - fast, easy, neat, and the angle is "self-adjusting". Prior to that I tried other various instruments but always manged to leave a little "meat" which results in a slight remnat of the toe in the adult dog. With the clippers, there is NO noticable scaring and no sign the dew claw was ever there. By the way, I do it at 2-4 days. The earlier the better as long as the puppies seem strong and healthy - there will be some bleeding but if that concerns you, you can use a steptic or a drop of crazy glue to seal the wound. Good luck!

I have seen dogs that have had there front dew claws cut off get raw places and bleed where they had been removed? i have never had a problem leaveing them on so i just do not do the front ones. the back ones set a little lower and get broke. they just dont look good to me. .... wingpatch

Wingpatch I always cut the back ones if they have them. I recently had a dog 5 minutes into a hunt have his front dewclaw hanging off. Made me want to start cutting the front ones off at birth too. The dogs that you saw with raw patches, were they done properly.
