A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
i have a 11 month old beagle and she loves to drink out of the toilet.
I keep water down for her all the time but she still drinks out of the toilet.
I put down the led and she just lifts it up, i can't tie it down because i have two small kids. i tried keeping the door closed but getting the kids to do that is a different story.
any suggestions.
Let me know what you come up with. I have an 18 month old boy that is facinated with the toilet. He flushes everything from tv remotes to shoes. I also have other young kids so cant lock it. Dont feel too bad, it could be worse.
My grandpa said he used to put a little amonia in his toiled to keep his bird dog from drinking there. The smell is strong, and after a few sniffs of that, they usually quit he says. Good luck!
I hate to sound wierd, but I see it this way. Dogs it their own crap, drink from mud puddles, eat anything they can find that is rotten . So I figure my toilet water is hooked in with the same plumbing that my drinking water is, so as long as its kept flushed and clean, I have never really worried about it. Plus, I think they like it cause it's always cold.
Good luck though
As for flushing stuff, boy do i remember those days, if you couldn't find something, dont bother looking anywhere else, just head for the toilet. I think my youngest first two words were.
Float and No Float...
Just a word from the Nurse. The heck with the dog as long as it is flushed and clean and has none of that blue flushy stuff in it. But be careful with the kids and the Porcellin Pond! It was in one of my past RN magazines that there are a large number of toddlers each year who drown in it. It seems that they play in the water and being big headed and tippy anyway they slip in head first. Once they fall in face first their now wet hands can only slip on the toilet surface as they struggle to get out. Please keep the bathroom door closed and locked if necessary to prevent such a tragedy from occuring.

The water in the toilet comes from the same source as the drinking water from the tap, but that doesn't mean it's not contaminated from being in contact with the toilet walls. Consider also that your dog could drink it and then lick your hand. If you don't wash your hands, then you could ingest some bacteria when you eat. Even a small amount of lower intestinal bacteria entering your stomach where it doesn't belong can cause serious illness - or at least a lot of discomfort (just imagine your worst case of food poisoning in your past). Just because it doesn't seem to affect your dog doesn't mean it won't do the same with you if he transfers anything over to you!
You may want to routinely put something bitter in the toilet a few times a day for a week-or-two (bitter apple spray, or maybe even pepper spray) to try and break the dog's habit if the kids simply won't cooperate with the house rules on the toilet lid. Ammonia or a household cleanser could kill your dog or cause some liver damage if he still drinks it.
