--VERY GOOD POINT WITH EXCEPTION- I HAVE AT LEAST MOST OF THE TIME TRIED, TO PUT MY HOUNDS IN PLACES WHERE THEY WILL GET HUNTED I NEVER TRIED BREEDING PET'S,AND TRIED TO CULL EARLY IT DOES NOT ALWAY'S WORK,I TO HAD SOME GOOD GRADE HOUNDS YEARS AGO,VERY HARD TO BREED THEM SUCESSFULLY........BUT IT CAN BE DONE....

A lot of good points made in this thread.

My opinion is the pedigree gives a lot of credit to many breeders.

It takes all of the categories combined to make a great one.

THATS WHAT I THINK ALSO. ALL THESE COMBINED CREATES 1 BAD HOUND I WISHED 1 TIME IN MY LIFETIME I COULD HAVE A WHOLE LITTER THAT MADE OUTSTANDING DOGS INSTEAD OF JUST 1OR 2 BUT IM NOT GOING TO COMPLAIN

I give God all the credit......great hounds come around once or twice in a lifetime. If it was up to the pedigree, the breeder, the owner, etc there would be more consistency of producing great hounds.

Some breeder/handler/owner work with the same pedigree or line of dogs for 50 years and only have 1 or 2 great dogs in their life.

Never met a kennel that produced 100 great ones. The ones closest to that feat go through 1000's to produce them. Most are not willing or able to go through 20,000 dogs to find 25 great ones. As a result, they lower their standard to what a great one is.....Just because they make the owner happy, or the owner is satisfied doesnt mean they can be categorized as great in the big picture.

I think its a miracle when a great one emerges, and I have not met any beaglers that do miracles yet! I will say the handler/owner has the most ability to ruin a great dog.

The problem lies in the definition of great. I have had many many beagles in my day and I can't say I have ever owned a great one yet. I have owned 3 or 4 pretty darn good ones but they had things I didn't like about them. A cousin of mine got rid of what I would call the greatest beagle I have ever gunned over by far.... She was something special. Luckily she came to a friend down the road and I got to enjoy her on many great hunts. In comparisson to her I haven't had anything as good as her.
hounds... hare.... hunter.... bang... what gets better than that.

YOUR EXACTLY RIGHT WHAT MAY BE A GREAT HOUND TO ME MAY NOT BE SO GREAT TO ANYONE ELSE BUT I HAVE OWNED AND SEEN A COUPLE THAT I NEVER SEEN ANYBODY RUN WITH THEM THAT DIDNT THINK THEY WAS AWESOME MAY NOT BE THIER STYLE BUT THAT DOESNT KEEP THEM FROM BEING A OUTSTANDING RABBIT MACHINE.MY IDEA OF A GREAT RABBIT DOG WOULD BE AS CLOSE TO BEING PERFECT AS THEY CAN BE. I OWNED A FEMALE OUNCE THAT COULD RUN A RABBIT HARD OVER A HOUR WITHOUT A BOBBLE ONE. THERE WAS NO SUCH THING AS A BAD SCENTING CONDITION TO HER. BUT HER MOUTH WAS WEEK WAS THE ONLY HOLE I COULD FIND BUT THAT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH HER RUNNING. THATS HOW I JUDGE A OUTSTANDING DOG IS HOW LONG THEY CAN RUN WITHOUT A CHECK AND WHEN THERE IS A CHECK HOW QUICK THEY RECOVER THAT CHECK.
