Adam has just hit the core of the problem when he said not to breed her.
If it is in her genetic makeup to want to run a deer there is nothing you or anyone else can do about it.As Red Briar said it will take lots of patience and lots of time to find out.You are the one that has to make the decision wether or not too try and break this dog.
I have a hunting buddy that has a dog that is now 6 years old and he has thought that he has had him broke on several occassions. This dog would go for months and not run a deer(and we hunt where there are plenty of deer) and then out of the blue he will leave out on one.It is just in him to want to run a deer .My buddy has a littermate to him that he shocked off of deer just a couple of times and she is broke,I have seen her turn down deer with other dogs in hot pursuit.
Of course everyone has different opinions, but again it is my opinion that if the dog is smart enough to figure out how to get around the punishment of running offgame, something in the dogs makeup makes it WANT to run offgame even when it knows it is not supposed to.
I wish you the best of luck in what ever decision you make, because ultimately it is your decision.
Need help breaking this hound off deer!

I like the way you described how smart your beagle is. That intelligence is a good trait to breed for.
To me, a hound is not broke until it turns down hot deer races another dog starts. I would drive around in the evenings with her and a known deer runner, put them on hot deer and light her up all of the way back to the truck if she shows any sign of trashing, even if she doesn't open. She needs to learn that she is not to run a deer even if another dog does.
As for her breeding potential, I am like the other guys, I don't breed beagles that are predisposed to running deer. But, that intelligence you speak of is a very desirable trait and if you decided to try a litter, do your homework and find a male that doesn't run deer and has a backround of not running deer in the dogs he is out of. Of course, you want to make sure he has the intelligence she obviously has.

Briarhopper, one more thing you might try, if there is a place available to you that raises deer in a pen you might talk to the deer farmer and put her in a pen with just deer and make her miserable with the shock collar, after a few lessons put her in the pen without the collar and see how she reacts. Also had an uncle years ago that would put any and all of his hounds in a small pen with a rutting buck, believe me they were cured when they came out. Just one more thought for you. Hope everything works out as b/4 I had shock collars or deer pens to work with I had one of the very best hare running dogs I have ever seen, just could not trust her, so had to let her go to South Carolina as a deer dog. Hope this helps. Hare

Thanks for all the feedback - keep it coming!
I'm not ready to cut my losses on this hound just yet. I've decided to spend the next month really working w/ her, giving her a lot of one on one - starting this evening and will be using a lot of the suggestions posted here. I won't run her in a pack again at least for the next month. I've got my Tri-Tronics fully charged!
I am confident that I can break her again - but I'm afraid that I will never be able to 100% trust her, at least not w/ another trashy hound - I hope that is not true. Only time will tell.
Another bit of info. - and this leads me to believe it is more circumstances and environemnt than genetics. I recently moved and my new kennel is about 75 yards from the house on the edge of some woods. Numerous times I've seen deer w/in view of the kennel. One time I saw 4 deer w/in 20 yards of the kennel!
So she is probably seeing deer on a daily/nightly basis. Sometimes they bark and other times they don't - but I'm sure she has learned from this experience that deer don't "bite" everytime you scent them.
I just need to reinforce what is acceptable and not acceptable while hunting / running.
I will keep you all posted on any progress.
