I am just now trying to get back in the patchs,.The first patch that i had was in 1959. lived at the time in oregon, the patch i had came out of N.Y. .I have had a lot of beagles since and a couple patchs too, To be real honest with you i have not seen or owned a better dog than the first patch i had . He ran to catch, geared up or down . he just did what ever it took. he ran a rabbit as if he was the rabbits own shadow. If you get what i mean..If a person ever gets to see one like that let alone own one he will never forget it :!:

PatchHounds, The biggest problem I see is that Willet died since you had that first Patch in 1959 and I would imagine the blood has changed drastically since he died. This is exactly what happened with the Yellow Creeks after Lon Watson sold them to his brother-in-law Vander Mass.

dg. what you say is very true, but i do beleave that both of this fine breeders culled very hard in there own line right up to the end. that to me is why they had such fine beagles. I think it is still there, but mabe i am wrong. ....wingpatch

I, to myself, was just comparing them to the Gay bred hounds of Frank Reese's kennel. There today is many variations of interpretations of what a Gay bred hound is. Lots of these I imagine Mr. Reese would not waste a handfull of feed on, if he was still alive. ;)

I have owned Patches for many years and to me there is no other strain of hunting beagle. Buyers searching for patches that are as close to what Willet would have wanted them to be are rare. I doubt if willet would have ever fed a Patch that would run at a snails pace unless it was old and he was using it for a pup trainer and yet there are patches out there like that today.

It may say patch on the papers and it may be registered as patch but if it is not a run to catch type of hound i guarantee it has little patch in it. Anything less would have had it's name scratched on the stone out by the kennel and it's ffffffffaults would have never been perpetuated today!

Wingpatch, I live in the U.P. of Michigan, I do not know the gentleman you described. I certainly have no intention of insulting anyone who fancies the patch line, however the ones I have seen in my part of the country I did not care for. Of the few I've seen most were good looking hounds but had little or no hunt and even less brains. They did have alot of speed but didn't know what to do with it. I have seen one that was a bit above average. As far as my breeding I have alot of Branko, Paycheck, Dom's Dougie / Michigan hare hound breeding.

I am really surprized at all the interest this book has brought, Not just from people interested about the patchs ,But of Willet Randall. I was just wondering if there be a second book or is there? wingpatch

There was only one printed and it was published in '68 by H & H. I guess Bob Beahm bought the rights and then reprinted it. I think he has offered it about 15 years in reprint.
