I've experienced the problem form both sides. I got a call one day from a neighbor who said my dogs had killed two of his game roosters. I asked him how much I owed him. He replied two hundred dollars. I drove over paid him two hundred dollars , asked for the roosters, and returned home with my beagles. He asked what I was going to do with the roosters, eat em? I said no I am going to beat those two dogs with them. I did until I thought I was going to have a heart attack. :) I don't knonw if beating the dogs helped the problem. I owned chickens and the beagles never ate them, so go figure.
On the opposite side, I lived out in the country and bums were often dropping off strays. If the dog had no collar and hung around for a few days, I made a trip to the landfill. If it had a collar I called the number or turned it in to the animal shelter. One day I heard the dogs barking and the chickens cackling. I went outside and a midsized white poodle, unclipped, was chasing the chickens. I notced that he had no collar but I threw some rocks and ran him off. The next day he was back. I figured he was a stray, since it had no collar, and I decided to get my shot gun a nd sprinkle him. Howeve, the fool instead of running away he ran toward me. I shot anyway. He left and didn't come back. A few months later I met my neighbor as she was walking her fence line. I was running my beagles and naturally we started discussing dogs. She mentioned that some low life had shot her poodle. She took him to the Vet because he was bleeding and the Vet told her he had been shot. Oops.

But he could have just as easily protected them by catching the beagle pup and returning it to the owner
I'm darn neer 70 years old, forget about catching an 8mo old pup, I'm not even going to try.
See this is because of not knowing all the facts.

Sure, everyone feels sorry about the pup, but that doesn't shift the responcibility for this from the dog owner to the rabbit owner. The man didn't keep his dog contained, end of story.

Tell you this tho' the only winners from people saying they will do such & such to a stock owner who shot a dog are HSUS & PETA

Two of my beagle pups dug into a mans chicken house where I left them all night when they wouldn't come in. He caught them and called me to come get them.
When I got there he had the dogs and a bill for me for $160.00 worth of dead young chickens he had piled up high that they had killed, and fixing his chicken house.

I thanked hin, paid him on the spot, loaded my pups and went home.

He was in his right to shoot them both.

About six years ago I caught the neighbors large breed dog (about 8 months old) under my rabbit hutch. When he saw me he took off. I went over to check the rabbits and found three with limbs torn off where the dog had grabbed a leg through the bottom of the cage. Yes the rabbits died (had to be put down)

I went to the neighbor (a big brawly looking biker guy you wouldn't want to meet up with in a dark alley) and explained the problem and asked him to keep the dog at home. I wasn't trying to pick a fight as we have no leash law but his dog DID destroy my "livestock". Well, he told me he would take care of the situation and I never saw the dog again in his yard or in mine. He did the right thing as I did. THIS is how neighbors work it out.

If a Pitbull was agressivly ripping apart you dog keenel to get to your beagles what would you do? I had this happen to me while I lived in a bigger city. Luckly the owner of the pit grabbed his dog and left before I could get outside. Protect your stock! and use common sense!

I dont quite see the resemblance to a aggresive pitbull and a 8month old beagle . Call me crazy but i dont see it . I guess the next Time my nieghbors cow gets in my field with our registered limosins i better get down the gun :gunguy: . The next time my nieghbors kids come down should i shoot and ask questions later? Those 8 year olds can be dangerous you know :argue:

No and I didn't ask him to. I lost three rabbits (Maybe $5.00 each based on the market back then). He lost his 8 year old son's beloved pet. Now who lost more? Heck I didn't expect the dog to be GONE! I just wanted him to keep him up in his own yard so he couldn't injure my rabbits. But he figured and I knew the next time the dog got loose he would be right back. :(

good point but it could have been someones child to, most of the time around here it is mostly curs i have trouble, but have had trouble with hounds a 8 month beagle can kill chickens as quick as a pitbull , order you a gamecock mag. and see what a good purebred a trio of game chickens sell for $ 2500.00 is not unheard of.

it is a shame the pup was shot but i don,t blame the other man he has a right to protect his stuff, as dog owners we need to expose our dogs to others forms of livestock same as we do for deer or fox thats what e-collars are for. their animals are valuable to.

If the man had rabbits im sure he knew beagles are bred to run them...Beagles arnt a big dog he could have done many other things than run to get a gun...he could have went over and picked up the pup far as that goes. Im sure the pup didnt have a clue any one was around.

But id say that he was just saying that to save his butt most likely the pup run tru his yard and wanted to shoot some thing :!: I would make sure those rabbits got took care of :!:

I think other means could have been taken but I would guess this wasn't the first time its happened, maybe not by that dog but by others and he was fed up thinking if I see another dog trying to kill or get in the rabbits I will put a stop to it.
I also think if a pitbull or anything else was trying to kill some of my dogs then I would shoot it so why couldn't he, im guessing a beagle would do to tame rabbits what a pitbull would do to my beagles.
Its always funny how people only look at things one way they refuse to see the picture from both sides.

yeah backyard but you can't run up on a pitbull and a beagle you can handle with a stick if things get ruff...pitbulls with snap a stick in half with one strike...my brother use to own 13 pitbulls not another dog meaner than I know of. but I do under stand what your saying...im a country boy ive had to lay out a few at times but they was all either in to some thing or working there way in or growling at me in a open field.
