I have seen many Gay bred dogs run (many were line-bred Gay stuff). I have seen some top-notch running from many of these dogs. Most I have seen or owned were medium to upper-medium speed and were full of hunt. Not many path-standers in the ones I have saw hunt. Most fit in with Progressive Pack trials and do well in them. There is a great guy not too far from me that keeps alot of Gay breeding and he does very well in PP trials, has a few PP RCH's too.

The other lines mentioned, I'll just leave that one alone!

There is a lot of Gay breeding behind the Boldstroke line. Gay Rocky shows up several times in almost if not all of the Boldstroke pedigrees.

bloodlines

Post by WELLS WOODS »

I've seen good and bad in all hunting beagle bloodlines. I used to have some dogs with Gay Baker, Gay Time, Gay Dash in thier pedigree. The one thing these dogs of mine had in common was intelligence, but some lacked desire.
Now I have a lot of Branko bloodlines in my hounds, although none are 100% Branko. I like IFC Branko's Heli-Prop in my dogs. They seem to have a natural ability to work a check close and thorough even as young dogs. A little story about Heli-Prop; a guy told me once at a trial in Ky, in the winners pack the hounds had run a rabbit for about 30 minutes and it crossed over on some private land that the club wasn't allowed to be on so they caught the dogs off the rabbit and moved to a new location 3 or 4 hundred yards away. They jumped another rabbit and ran it for about an hour and finally put it in a junk pile. They then handled the pack, but couldn't find Heli-Prop. They thought he might be hung in the junk pile because he was there when they put it in. A few minutes later they heard him way back on the private land where they had run the rabbit over an hour earlier. He had went back and found that rabbit and had it up and going. Now that's desire and brains!
I've seen FC Branko's Jackpot run. He had a lot of brains and hunt, but in my opinion he was a little over competitive and wanted to be on the front end all the time. He had the best personality I've ever seen in a beagle. I saw him once while waiting in the field to run at a trial, stand on his back legs for a good ten minutes and try to watch the pack that was running before him. Quite a balancing act.
I like these two dogs in my breeding if possible and the bitch that I see in a lot of good Branko dogs is Greenbrier Branko's Tootsie( IFC Birch Haven Bruiser x FTC Branko's Pretty Freckles). She was the mother of IFC Maravic's Blue Ninja; also a great producer.

Thats ok to disagree with me. Branko hounds have to be hunted hard and

if not hunted a lot , some act as you say. Branko hisself is a very hard hunter. I have been to the Krpans home serval times and ran dog swith Branko. You leave the house every day at 7 a.m. and you come in at 5 p.m. to do chores. Thats the way he runs dogs. When he ask you what kind of dog you want and you tell him that you are ahard hunter and want a double tuff hound. He thinks you hunt hounds they way he does. he sends you a tight twisted hound that can fill the bill. Then you hunt every other Sat. morning and say Branko sent you a sorry dog. As for as Deer runing , if you have hunted very long you should know how to stop the deer running and have broke dogs. Come out here and I will teach you how to have a clean pack.

Branko

Not much experience with Branko, I do have a Branko/Bramlett and the only thing I have noticed is she is timid with people. Very fast though and a ton of drive. Has anyone else noticed this with Branko bred or outcrossed dogs?

Excuses, excuses, sure seem to get alot of those from some dog owners. I have been raising beagles for 20 years and have never had to break a dog off of junk. Talk to anyone that has ever put dogs down with us. When you have 6-8 dogs and 2 give you a deer running problem you cull them. Thats what happen to the dogs Branko bragged on as clean running and top notch. It is as simple as that guys......

I have a female that is Rising Sun Red Mark Blazer (Mark V Snoopy) breeding x China (daughter of Maravic's Ninja). Her name is Chickadee and she is one tough cookie. She was the earliest starter I have ever owned and would rather puond rabbits than eat, sleep or cuddle. She was started by 4 months and running her own rabbit at 5 months. I would have thought it was a crock if somebody were to tell me a hound could do this at that age. I have had beagles for 31 years now and she was by far the youngest and easiest to start. She is a beautiful blue tic beagle with excellent conformation. Her strong points arer her brains, endless search and desire and stick to it attitude. She often has been out with others that have come to a dead track that everyone said "it went in a hole" when the hounds came back, yet a few minutes latter she has it up and running again and the other hounds run back to rejoin the chase. Chicadee is a great cottontail hound but is a real terror on hare!! She will never be for sale and is one of my true favorites. The only negatives would be that she can be hard headed and you need to intercept her on the line if you need to go and she is running because you will never call her off no matter what, and she is a little tight mouthed. My expeience with this Rising Sun cross with the Branko was an absolute success and I am happy we did it. For the record her 5 littermates all with the exception of one turned out to be excellent hunters. :D

I have a couple Branko Bred pups about 15 months old, male and female littermates. Their Grandfather on the sire side is Heli-Prop and that is the main reason I got the little guys. I am pretty pleased with the little female so far, she could use a bit more hunt when first casted out, but after she gets a good whiff of bunny she really gets down to business with the searching. Hopefully she will get better as time goes on in that respect. She has great conformation, a good nose and honest mouth, and lots of energy. The male leaves a lot to be desired :???: , Absolutely no hunt, me-too dog, showing signs of being tight mouthed  and will more than likely be sent on his way after this gun season. They both started around 8 months of age, handle like a dream and are smart. I know of another female out of this litter that is coming along nicely and her owner is very pleased so far. I have seen both good and bad from Branko hounds, but that is to be expected in any line, you just need to look at the percentages of each!

Hey NYH, shoot me an e-mail or Private message me when you get the time. I sent you a PM about a week ago because the e-mail addy I have is no longer working. I might need some of that Rising Sun stuff to get a little more hunt in my hounds. ;)

I have owned a couple and have watched numerous (40+) Branko dogs run and I feel this is one of the more inconsistant lines. Branko is like saying beagle. Could be fast, could be slow, could have poor confirmation, could be rough. I do think this line is now so wide spread and mixed up that its not what it started out to be. Everyone know the Kerpan's are in this for the money, and its obvious that some compimising has taken place. I dont know of a dominating stud dog they currently have. If you say the two that placed at the nationals this past year I rest my case.

As for the Gay line, I have a 13" male that I like as well as any dog I have ever owned. His sire side was Gay breeding. Top side complete outcross so not sure where all his traits come from. But he is Hard hunter with plenty of drive!

As time goes on the man gets old and his heart is not what it used to be. He can't get around like he once did but I will say this, Records live and opinons like yours fade away. Branko went to just a few hunts last year and placed dogs most every where he went. Thank you

mybeagles... Tell us about this gay bred male of yours. Is this the same one that people were talking about at a trial a year or so ago? You know the one that ran circled a deer in a 70 to 100 acre enclosure several times before climbing over the fence and following the deer that jumped out. And then after all of this, ran the deer for another couple hours on the outside, before once again climbing the fence to the enclosure and following the deer back inside? Just curious because if it is, I think we all would love to have a dog with that much desire...

The moral of this little story is don't throw bricks when you live in glass houses. Good day and God bless you!

You must have me confused with another guy. I do very limited trialing and to date this male has been in 3 trials with 1 win a 4th and one winners pack. I had a deer runner two years ago that I gave to guy because he didnt want to see me destroy it. It was Northway Driver/Spur bred. The last time I heard he was still running deer. He was on the cover of this american beagler web site 3 months ago. Barry Rose Jack. Maybe I should have stuck with my original plan!!!!!!
