Rabbit hunting was just about all my grandpa did until I lost him at the age of ten. I will always remember hunting with him those few years before he passed. Didn't rabbit hunt much after that but dad and I got into deer beagles. Owned them for a long time until I got out of high school. Stayed away from dogs while in college and starting a family. Then I moved out to western NC where deer are pretty scarce and then met a guy on a hunting talk forum like this one that rabbit hunted. Started tagging along for obvious reasons, rabbit season is 3 1/2 months long here and deer season is only 3 weeks. Got my own dogs about 4 years ago and met another man while on a call this past Feb. who is president of the local beagle club. Once I saw registered dogs work I was hooked, and now they elected me secretary of the club!!

Started back in the mid 40's and only had non AKC beagles for hunting.

Some of the older men wanted to start a beagle club so I sent off up north for a registered female and some of the men did the same. These were out of AKC Champions all red in the pedigrees.

They were Brace Beagles as that was all the trial there was back then for beagles.

We sold bonds and I worked at an A&P store after school and weekends to buy what I could as a young boy. The club we started was and is today called "The Magic City beagle Club" and still is on the grounds we purcheased back then. Sure improved today with fences, kennels, but he old house an old man lived in is still ther and remodled into a nice clubhouse. Great folks!

Ran with a lot of the old dogs and Champions you see in the pedigrees of your AKC dogs, especially if you go back past the 5 to 7 generation. Ha, ha!

It was a big deal for folks up north to come down for a trail but lots did and we went all out to show the Southern hospitality. Not an easy trip on those old roads and sometimes a trainer or campaiger would come with a truck load of dogs that he was paid to campaign for the owners and enter them all.

Many a big name champion was campaigned that way as it was hard to get to enough trials and work a job too.

Some big name kennels had several dogs being campaigned by different men. Sometimes they all would wind up at the same trial and have to compete against one another. That wasn't liked too much as it cut down on the chance of winning for all but one.

How AKC dogs for the most part have changed.

Still are lots of brace trials around here today. Go to one if you've never been and see what is the breeding back in most if not all of your dogs.

Just reminencing!

I always was interested in hunting dogs my grandfather owned coon dogs but lost him at a young age and dont remember any of it. I think it was in my blood because i always said i wanted hunting dogs and finally 5 years ago i got my first beagle named Dixie she was 8 years old when i got her she handled really rough and chased off game but when she ran a rabbit it was really nice control and decent speed for an older dog. I got my next beagle alittle less than a year later named her Sammie she is 4 years old now i got her at 8 weeks and she got me hooked on real hunting dogs that could get it done the right way. So i guess i just got myself into it and have been overly obsest about these dogs ever since :D .

I've never hunted

However, I've wanted a beagle for a very long time.

My son hunts, and I started to go with him. He would hunt with his dog, and he kept saying that I should get a dog so that I could hunt with him.

When my wifes (our's) dog died, the house was empty, and she wanted another dog. I told her that this time "I get to choose the dog" (I think that she knew that I wanted a beagle).

She helped me look for one, and she was the first to see an add that said someone was selling beagles. I jumped on it, and picked out the puppy that I thought met my requirments ;)

and than I started to look for forums that delt with these stubborn but loyal buddys. My buddy is now ten months old--I will soon be hunting for real with my son (excited about starting on hare again soon), and will be happy as a lark.

So--I got my start just a little bit less than a year ago, and my son and I will probably share our hunts together as a true father/son team--his dog and mine

That is AWESOME 1950van. Keep us posted on how everything goes. I was brought up on beagles and rabbit hunting but am getting back into it now after a few years away...from beagles, not hunting. There's nothing like it, especially when you do it with your kids. I am really looking forward to taking my daughters with me! That's what's so great about rabbit hunting. You can talk to your kids, move around, etc. That's something you can't do sitting quietly in a deer stand. Just my .02!
