A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)

All these would of had the best of care and been enjoyed by all in the household but animals are just that, animals.
Not to be mistreated at all, but must earn their keep or be gone.
Not talking about people not being able to work, that is entirely a different story!!!
Um, human beings are "just animals" too. The truth is, man (in all his worldly advance) is merely an upright-walking mammal, wearing pants.
That being said, we humans tend to place different values on different animals, precisely in relation to how close a given animal can bond with us (or how far they are from the capacity or ability to bond with us). I mean, who can get close to a chicken or a worm? These lower animals have no emotions and they do not avidly work with us, relate to us, or try to please us---thus most people don't place a great deal of value on them as individuals. In fact, the only value of many farm animals have is that of food. Thus the death and our eating such animals is the entire reason we keep many of them at all. We farm them like crops.
A good dog, however, is a different story. In our culture, dogs are not food animals, they become our companions and helpers precisely because they have the capacity to relate to us on many different levels. Dogs have a wide variety of emotions and they avidly try to please us in many different ways. Dogs try their best to do our bidding, they greet us with cheer, and they place so much value on us in return that they will defend us and our family from harm. Many dogs have actually pulled family members from buring homes or barked and barked until help came to save an unconscious loved one. What mule or chicken would do this? Therefore, a good dog does more than "earn his keep" as a dumb animal, a good dog truly is a valuable friend, companion, and protector.
Therefore, IMO, any man who would just use a dog up for all it's worth ... and who cannot understand that even the best of dogs grow old and wear out ... and who would thereby refuse to make his elder dog's life happy and comfortable and allow him live out his last days in peace ... but who would instead prefer to just kill it and not be bothered with it anymore ... is a totally selfish and insensitive person, and is not the type I would want to have as a friend.

You proved yourself to me to be an all knowing, smarter than any of us asshole long ago so I sure don't count you as a friend!

I take it that you to are divorced from one another right? You two sound like an ex husband and ex wife the way you talk to eachother.

You people that think farm animals are not smart, did you know that i can prove that a jack ass spoke in a human voice on one occassion. Yes it's recorded on paper.

And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord, she fell down under Balaam: and Baalam's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with his staff. And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Baalam, What have i done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times ? And Baalam said unto the ass, Because thou hast mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now i would kill thee. And the ass said unto Baalam, Am not i thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since i was thine unto this day? was i ever wont to do so unto thee. This is also recorded in a little black book Numbers 22:27-30.

I say they stay here untill they past on, they can lay in the sun when its warm and I will supply a warm shelter in the winter. The meals and Meds included. Not giving a hound its due in the end is no respect.
My opinion is that a good dog has worked for it's retirement at my place and will end it's days being lazy, sleeping around my kennel and having the best spot. But that is just me, I don't find anything wrong with a person who chooses to get rid of his dog when it can no longer do its job especially if room is tight. I am neither a judge or jury, With that said I would bring a few pups home and explain to the wife the older dogs only have a short time left. It's funny that if a woman didn't have that anatomy part that us men don't have. Chances are we wouldn't keep them around either......LOL!....DH
John,
Some only pretend to know what makes a dog happy that is bred for work...
There is a time for each that know they're not a part of this world any more...
I was there when my grandmother heard the drums beat and the calls from her ancestors, I sang of the grace and the welcome that awaited her as she left on angels wings.
It is our own selfish want that holds these spirits back, some will never understand this...

Patch i totally can understand what you are saying, my mother did a lot of suffering before she passed on and she had a longing to be on the otherside than in this world with all the pain and suffering.
