John ,
Your asking the wrong hillbilly that question, It would have to come from somebody way more powerful than me.
All I do is gun hunt and read this board, so that tell's you my knowledge of how things are run in the ARHA.
Try people like Lynn Perkins, J. Murphy, Aaron Bartlett. or even David Haugh, thats where I go for my information on things.lol

I tend to favor ARHA LP myself. I believe it has the most votes because it pulls the largest amount of beaglers. It wouldn't matter to me either way if LP started certification. It is a proven division with or without it. I also believe it is the toughest to compete in by far, with the largest number of hounds to beat at most trials. I know last year our Ohio state hunt pulled over 200 hounds, if I remember right PP pulled about 70.

I too wish that LP would go to a certification process where they shot over the dogs and the dogs had to solo a rabbit. The title of champion would mean a lot more and their would probably be a lot less champions. I have seen a lot of great dogs in LP but I have seen some complete idiots and wild ones too that I know couldn't run a rabbit by themselves if their life depended on it. It is still my favorite format and I still plan to support it 100%.

What if they made it voluntary. Could the certifying club then get it put on your papers ffor you somehow with the words Certified Champion before the dogs name.

I don't like a bunch of letters like UKC has in front of their dogs names as dumb folks like me or others that are not trialing that format can never figure out what they all mean. Its impressive though like a doctors titles that I do not understand either, well, maybe a little bit.

I've come up with an even better idea, make them certify before they can even hunt them in the hunt, dog numbers would be down I know, but you wouldnt have to run with a whole lot of junk either.
I know thats unrealistic but it is a good thot. lol

I like the fact that they have to certify also.

I think it is a great idea.

The dog has to be a gun dog first and a trial dog second.

Certification would be nice in Little Pack and am all for it,not only would it get rid of those that couldn't take the gun but it would also eliminate the "NON HUNTERS" you know the ones i'm talking about that stand around till another dog jumps a rabbit, then watch out they'll check you to death.
Does this make me think any less of little pack NO! I feel this is where some of the tuffest dogs are,if judged fairly a dog gets credit for "ITS" work.
Does not being a certified champion on paper make me think anyless of my hounds or (SOME) of the others i've seen run NO.Because when i'm not trialing,i'm either runnin'em or gunnin'em.
Alabama John i'll be your first to volunteer, maybe after some of those big swampers down your way

Anyone that is against certification must have "me too" dogs that are gunshy! That is the one and only way to assure us that we are breeding to "real" rabbit dogs.

Perkins and I have had this discussion many times. It's the only one that he has ever made any sense in, so I hold this subject dear to my heart. I have also seen too many hounds that were nothing more than outstanding check dogs go on to champion and beyond. I have also heard of hounds that were gunshy to the extreme that became champions. If we had a certification, we wouldn't have to worry about the very real danger of having a kennel with our "trial hounds" on one side and our "huntin' hounds" on the other. No matter what registry or format you prefer, if you are a beagler, I believe that we can all agree on one thing. No matter the style, speed, etc. we want our hounds to be able to jump and circle a rabbit on their own. If a beagle can not find his own rabbit, jump it, and circle it to the gun then it should not be reproduced unless you are planning to take it to the Westminster KC show.. I don't say this to stir up a stink, but I truly believe that a hound should account for his game, no matter what style you prefer him to do it in, and we all have a right to our preferences.
