Yep I did work at the Kraft plant in Kirksville for about 8 months a few years ago. We used to take hounds down to the pens in MO and hunt the competitions. Its been a few years since I was down there. Used to run in "Pigs Pen" in Ottumwa. IA. alot more. They do a coyote hunting competition out of someplace down there that we hunt every year. Usually do pretty well only running about 6 trucks that weekend.

Honestly dogs like him arent for sale. Normally to get a good one you either have to buy a pup, or a dog just past his prime. In the last ten years I've bought one dog and sold three to five maybe...not much of a trader....My uncle already had some good hounds when I got in and we raise our own and pretty well keep them to ourselves. I'm of the belief that if it isnt good enough for me why would I sell it and pass it on. I'd sell you a pup or two that wasnt started but if I start them they're either gona be what I want or a cull there is no in between. I get a kick out guys who have 2yr old dogs for sale that are just burners. Really who the hell sells a 2yr old dog thats setting the world on fire? I will only sell puppies or old dogs, like I said if a dog in his prime doesnt suit me I'm not gona pass him on to someone else. I did sell real nice 7 year old male with a pup off him this past summer. He's out of his prime now but can still get it done and the guy was wanting a pup and an old dog to train it with so it all worked out. The dog was an absolute killing machine. I have 6 pups off him myself that'll be ready to get started next summer and will be primed for next winter, assuming there's any in the litter that make the grade.

The guys I run into around here are generally carrying a gun so do most guys shoot or let the dogs make the kill? Or does it just depend on the type of hound you run?

I dont carry a gun most of the time myself but most of my crew does. I'd just as soon the dogs caught it myself but always good to get one down in front of a pup. Alot of it depends on the terrain. Guys in certain areas that talk about catch dogs dont have the terrain we have here, honestly the dogs they run are completely WORTHLESS here as they can barely smell their own ass but they get the job done with style in the flatland country. Their dogs are built for speed and have catch on their mind, I want a dog that always wants to catch his game but here in the rolling hills, deep ditches, and big timbers you must have a good nose and a brain as well.Bunnyblaster wrote:The guys I run into around here are generally carrying a gun so do most guys shoot or let the dogs make the kill? I guess the real answer to your question has more to do with your terrain than anything. The type of dog you run will also be dictated by your terrain. Atleast it will if you want to have good running. I could go get a flatland dog to run coyotes here but it wouldnt be much fun. It's alot easier to find good flatland dogs, they just need to be fast and have endurance with just enough nose to keep a track goin through small patches of brush. I go out to the flatlands and hunt a few times a year. It's alot of fun to do something different but isnt my cup of tea as there just isnt any type of real good dog work involved.
