Re: Logan Elm Blue Skim
Over around our parts every one that seen skim run talked about how nice of a rabbit dog he was, not to change the topic but why have dog lineage from this era become so hard to find. Adam has done a good job keeping skim alive as I have a female out of Bach who is turning into a really nice hound. And its just not skim but it seems there is always some one looking for something old blooded. Were they just not flashy enough and now people are realize that flashy and fast in the spring dont make them an every day condition rabbit dog ? Maybe its just me but ive seen people looking for some old " big time" stuff, bruners "lucky" , "ole bad cliff", "Duddings Duke" ect . I realize some of the mentioned is easier to find than others but nothing like other bloodlines today that are throwing average Rabbit dogs at best.

I think a lot of the reason for dogs not being appreciated is their short life span. Most males aren't used too much until they are 4 or 5 years old. By the time their pups are old enough to evaluate, they are on their last leg.
You mentioned Ole Bad Cliff--I never liked most of the young dogs out of him, and there were quite a few in our area. But when these dogs were bred many of them were excellent reproducers. For some reason dogs in the second generation were better than their sires and dams. I have seen a lot of dogs with Cliff in the third and fourth generation of their pedigree that were good dogs and good reproducers. Unfortunately, by the time everyone figured this out, Cliff was long gone. I'd bet a lot of people would like a chance to breed to him now, once they have seen what a great impact he had over dogs in future generation.

The maternal grandsire effect is what it's called. Kinda like secretariat, his stud colts and mares weren't known for their winnings on the racetrack. However when his mares were bred to top studs then that's where his worth was shown in the brood lot.JCM wrote:I think a lot of the reason for dogs not being appreciated is their short life span. Me and the late Craig Tull stayed with them the best we could it came down between skim and Jerry liver mores dog which her name I can't remember sorry but ol skim just seem to always stay one check ahead. I bought a pup out of skim from Trent wood aka swing his name was ship. I remember when my daughter Becky would Handel him all the other handlers thought she was hollering crap crap crap when she would call him in lol

The late 90's and early 2000's was probably some of the most fun I've had in beagling. Before some people convinced me to start a monthly magazine about it, LOL. From then on I didn't have time to run dogs. I miss all the old gang of Little Pack Beaglers, though.

Re: Logan Elm Blue Skim
If I am correct Donnie and Jerry did put Katie into the Hall of Fame, and bev you are correct those days were the good times. I miss them along with the old crowd and the great hounds. If u guys remember most were grade dogs, but were legends in the field. Little Pack never really got the respect it deserved . In my opinion. Skim was prove of that, I asked how many rabbits they killed over him once they replied very few, I always thought how strange that seemed to me. He could smoke a rabbits azz.

Bev that pic sure does bring back the memories. I always enjoyed both of the Surber boys and those were the good times. I hated it when I heard they were getting out because you don't meet guys like that every day. Skim was a nice hound and I enjoy his pic too.
Re: Logan Elm Blue Skim
What was the guy's name who had Skim in between McGuires and Surbers? Brent somebody? Lived out by Rockville? I thought he killed a ton of rabbits over Skim. I might be remembering wrong. I don't think Skim got a whole lot of trialing until Surbers got him because he was young when he left McGuire's and that fella didn't trial much. Jim correct me if my memory's wrong on this.

Re: Logan Elm Blue Skim
His name was Brent Sillery.
He was a gun hunter mostly. He put Skim in some trials. He may have champion him out.
I think the McGuires sold him to the Bryant brothers in Ohio. They sold him to Sillery. I could be wrong.
Jim McGuire probably does not remember this but Dave Surber introduced me to him at the Bird hunters Club in Petersburg one morning before the Little World.
I would say that was 1999 or 2000.
Good memories. Still trying to make some! My vision gets blocked from time to time with the lights. Bud Lights!

Brent Sillery, that's the guy. I know one thing, nobody taught Skim how to handle, lol! Lord. My Redd dog was just as bad.

Re: Logan Elm Blue Skim
If memory serve me right.
Skim was a rabbit champion when Brent Sillery got him.
I remember Brent running him for the first time at the Wildcat club.
I do believe it was in the champion class. I do remember he won that day.
Bev, I just was reading back. I am not sure which Jim you where talking about me or Absire.
I do remember your old Rowdy dog. Watched him run at Mt Orb one day in the hot spring heat.
