Georgia Beagler:
I hate to differ with you but as a FULL time USDA meat and poultry inspector, I know and have worked in what is called by the industry as "Distressed Slaughter" plants. The federal ragulations were just changed this year to prohibit "Downer" cattle from being slaughtered in Federal Establishments but anything that can walk can and does get slaughtered. Where do you suppose those types of animals go? One of the biggest profit margins in the industry is from less than perfect animals that can be bought for cents on the dollar but sold right next to top beef for the same price once processed. Do you really think that a seller is going to sell them all to dog food manufactures for pennies on the dollar when they will actually bring top dollar in a meat case? The dog food manufactures don't purchase a lot of live cattle or poultry either. They purchase rendered meat and bone meal from the rendering companies who have picked up ALL of the disposed junk from the slaughter and processing plants. Some pet food manufactures will purchase offal such as hearts, liver, spleens and lungs that have been condemned from use as human food but for the most part this also goes to the rendering companies. Also all the condemned chickens and turkeys go to the rendering companies for poultry by-products in pet foods as well.
