A good jump and hunt dog hunts like a english pointer. If a beagle is as active as an english pointer, and put their nose in the ground and work very hard, a rabbit will be jump. Always remenber that the dog who works the hardest will most of the time jump the rabbit. Jumping and hunting is nothing if the dog does not work at all. The dog has to work hard for a rabbit to jump and hunt hard to circle the rabbit back to the gun.

I want a dog that hunts by whatever term you want to call it. Search, looking, desire..................whatever! HUNT! When I pick up my gun next winter to go to the woods or feilds for rabbits, I'm not looking, I'm not searching.........I AM HUNTING with intent to bring home some rabbit. I want my dog to have the same attitude. I have a few dogs that are better jumpdogs than the others, but they all hunt. Not just for anything, but for RABBIT. We may have an occasional cat race and have had a coyote race, but my dogs know that it is RABBIT "hunting" time. They intend for the rabbit to go home with them too. If they happen to catch it before i shoot it, then they got to have more fun hunting that day than I did.(lol) I don't claim to have the best dogs in the world or even close, but I will tell you that if it lives at my house it is going to HUNT. I am a hunter and so are my dogs.
I believe hunt/search are synonymous, the visible difference being the intelligence of the hound and his method and ability to adapt and adjust.
It seems the rabbit has a mood for every day, some days he holds close, and others, he seem to taunt the hounds and dares them into pursuit(always felt this way when I'd see 2 or 3 rabbits/hare running the same line ahead of the hounds).
A hound that is fixed to the same method of hunt for every day is like the hound who refuses to reach out on a check, when the hope of unraveling the puzzle has been exhausted and valuable time is being lost, or like the hound who flashes over the cover without giving a proper look, when the rabbit is sitting tight(have you ever seen a hound circle the down wind side of cover, smart hound), both are at fault for either extreme. Each day bring a new set of circumstances for the hound to evaluate
Of course, we as hunters must do our part and allow the hounds liberty to do what they know best and are better equiped than us to accomplish, the finding and pursuing of game. The results are a matter of the gifts the hound is blessed with and the intelligent manner in which they adapt and put them to use...Patch
