A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
Nothing critical Thall just asking questions and and creating friendly discussion. I believe that is what this site is all about. The Duke, is a little formal just call me Joe
Thall you would be surprised at the size of a shotguns pattern even a closed choke at forty yards, if you are using a 12 guage their would be a killing pattern of #4 in a 30 inch circle at 40, but if you are using a 410 their would be very little in the 30 inch cirlcle. The larger the choke the larger the shot you can use and still produce effective patterns, for smaller guages you probably should downsize for effective pattern. Pattern kills. The numbers dont lie.
Joe i like to hear stuff like this. I've never shot paper with my shotgun. If i start having trouble, i change shot when i run out of shells. Like you said rabbits are easy to kill. i just don't want to shoot them to pieces.
* I enjoy meeting new Beaglers & Squirrel Dog Owners. It's a blessing to find other's with such unique interests.
* I also enjoy helping future hunters.
Hunting with 410s are great fun and with a pistol even more. Thall for hunting rabbit, the smartest bet is buying a cheap 2 to 4 dollar box, it sure is more economical and you dont need much to kill em. You are right on there.
DRamey wrote:My son is 9 yr old and is hunting this year with a NEF 28 ga. youth model. We have been shooting clays and he is breaking me up, around $10 a box is as cheap as I can find 28's. I have tried the Cheaper than Dirt catalog (its not), and Sportsman's Guide, and all the Local Wally World has are 7-1/2 AA's. Looks like I am going to have to start reloading. Anybody have any ideas about cheaper 28's? The worst thing of all is that I have a Buzzsaw hound now and he is probably going to get to shoot a lot! (shameless plug for Buzzsaw hounds)
If you think those winchester AA's are salty price a box of winchster superXX 1 oz loads $16.95 a box. I took a n.e.f. youth 28Ga. put an adult choate synthetic stock on it and the forearm off a n.e.f. survivor added a hi-vis bead. built this as my "walkabout gun" since I got back into beagles it has become my rabbit gun .what surprised me with this gun is I made some home made slugs and it shoots them well 4" groups at 50 yards.the only reloader I have for 28 ga is an old lee classic loader [one with no press ] and it would take all day to load a box of shells with it..

b.t.w. the slugs are for coyotes only
Every breath I take as a Free man was paid for with the blood of an American Soldier
12 Guage mossberg pump with the barrel sawed off at 22 inches or there about. When I do shoot one it is normally close because these cutovers in NC are thick and I don't want to shoot the rabbit up usually only land 2/3 shot but that will do the job. 7 1/2 remington low brass is my choice.
28ga. Remington Express Long Range #6 shot or Winchester Super X High Brass #5 shot.
Expecting a carjacker or rapist or drug pusher to care that his possession or use of a gun is unlawful is like expecting a terrorist to care that his car bomb is taking up two parking spaces
28 ga. Winchester AA 7.5 shot. The AA Sporting have a muzzle velocity of 1300 f.p.s. Why pay $16.00 for a box of Super X when they are not traveling any faster and shot is shot. Only takes one to kill a rabbit and you won't find a better hull than the Winchester AA for you reloaders.
Wally World sells the AA in 28 ga. for $8.79 a box here where I live.
Just picked up a Thompson Center Custom 28 ga. barrel for my Encore. Can't wait to try it out.
