I have been told in the past by three individuals who are pretty big names in the trialing end of beagling, are also licensed A.K.C. judges and all three of them have made multiple field champions. And I quote "I wouldn't own a 15" male!"and"I don't care what they've won,I can stand a big male!" and "You ever see a 15" class of big males that could REALLY run a smooth line and actually keep the rabbit going?"If any of these three guys are going to keep a male it's going to be a little one.
I know I am getting old however; you must be ghost reading because I don't see "under the gun" anywhere.

Growing up all we had was 15" males and if they could not run a rabbit they were given away. I can think of 9 or 10 in our family that could flat smoke a rabbit. Thronie's dog ran the front all day long and was the best I have seen in 10 years. Jaws was there and he was still the best. Now Jaws was hurt as a pup and is not as fast as some dogs but, Thornie's dog smoked all day long.

With all that said all I own is females however; I am hoping Jill will have three males for me this November.

That is the great thing about this country (as long as Obama is not running it) we can have our own thoughts.
I am with you on the big males Rod. I have a pretty big male (14.5"...1.75 years old)) that I have ran all week and he is out jumping my best jump bitch, which I find remarkable because she is pretty darn good, and driving the rabbit hard on dry wooded leaves. He has done it solo and in a pack. He is starting to act like a dog I used to own named Yogi. He is also broke off trash and is also a son of Dutch. He is starting to mature and run more like his sire. Seems like his nose has finally matured but he seems to tie on to the rabbit better than he did in good running conditions.
A hard driving big male has to be ran a lot and ran down to be any good. If they sit in the kennel too long it ruins them.
I do agree it is harder to find a good big male with foot that does it correctly and when you do they will never be for sale.

Have a problem with females always Coming in heat during rabbit season. Have both but my big male is the best jump dog I have can run a rabbit right and retrives a dead rabbit to boot. If they can get the job done a big male is a lot less trouble [ never in heat can run them any time] Like My females can kill a ton of rabbits over them. Just the male is a better all around gun dog.
