I agree with Rabbit Earl about the sick rabbits getting caught easier than healthy ones. The ones I have caught usually were filthy with fleas which is always an indicator of bad health to me.

Chapko, we used to run up by Glen Cove on Drummond. Every now and then, after a good hard chase the snowshoe would run out on the rocky beach of Lake Huron and it would be fatal for him. Generally, these were healthy hare but they just lost their bearings from being run so hard.

My dogs, generally lose a rabbit before they run him long enough to catch. They are better on fox but have never caught one of those unless it was wounded.

rabbitearl I would love to come run in your pen, don't get much running down here during deer season, A got a box load of potlicking heathens that could use a good tune up. they will pack up so you can throw a blanket over them.

I would say that is why they pay to run in a pen to start with, because they can't keep one going. From what I've seen, most people that will drive and pay to run in a pen have a hard time jumping rabbits or they can't keep one going very long and need a place with plenty of rabbits so they don't have so much down time. I know some may not have very many running spots, but many many many beaglers do not have good all around dogs. Some have good hunt but can't run him for 20 minutes and some can run him for hours if they can ever jump him. Breeding for the total package is the only way for a poor ole working man, whether they'll trial or not make's no difference to me. I just love to go to the swamp and give ole rabbit what for.

bluemouse, I believe I remember reading in a post that you are around the Charleston area. If that is correct, you are about 7 hours from me. Thats a little far to see a man in a dress. Well? Maybe if you shave your legs

Hood swamp I am in Rocky mount and it takes me 5 hours. I think you could run 70 over to 95 and it is a straight shot all the way to 26. you are south of me I think you could make in at least the same amount of time. Bluemouse is in Summerville about halfway between 95 and Charlston.

Sounds like you and Dave have basically the same style dogs, I bet they would pound together.

Hood Swamp wrote:Faster dogs is not the answer. That is me in the photos and my dogs are not fast. They are just medium to a step above medium in speed. They have caught 4 rabbits in the last six weeks. Two of the rabbits were caught with 4 dogs, 1 was caught with 5 dogs, and the other was caught while running with a friend and this included 11 dogs.

Constant and steady pressure has been the key. The rabbits caught were run between 45 minutes and 2 hours. They were all caught at different running grounds in the wild.
No swinging pack of 100 hounds here!!!

Rabbitearl, Who ever said check free for 10 minutes? I said good NOT perfect.

Ohlinger, I'm sorry you have no way of understanding

I'm not driving 40 minutes, 5 hours, or 10 hours to prove anything! As I stated earlier, they may never catch another, but they have done pretty good lately. I started this post because I thought you guys with run to catch bloodlines would enjoy and have possitive imput.

Anybody want to see mine, come on down, but I don't run with dogs I don't know, so we'll have to run two different packs if you bring any dogs.

Well hood swamp you don't have to prove a thing to the world, understood! All I did was give a open invitation to who ever would like to run some bunnies, but even if you came is way I can tell you now the only person that would end up wearing a dress would be you, I would leave the dress on the road and can almost bet ya that the briars and water in my neck of the woods would cause you to stand in the road to hear the race. Bleeding for a rabbit is just to much for some. As for not running with hounds you don't know thats ok too, my potlicker don't have no shame. Home court advantage is a b!!tch.

Hoodswamp said, "Anybody want to see mine, come on down, but I don't run with dogs I don't know, so we'll have to run two different packs if you bring any dogs." I always have trouble with this kind of attitude so someone explain it to me. Why would anyone drive a ways to run with someone and then run by themselves. Not be smart here. When I visit someone, I like to be with them and run with their dogs. Thats the point.

Hey Hood Swamp I wasn't saying you had anything to prove, in the right situation dogs catch rabbits. I will have to for the most part agree with Olinger though, normally it happens running fields or thin woods with large packs of rough dogs.

What I was saying is that if you go you will have a good time.
