Hare hound vs. Cottontail hound
Moderators: Pike Ridge Beagles, Aaron Bartlett
Keep in mind too, that within hare and cottontail bloodlines, speed and control can vary drastically. I have fairly typical hare bloodlines in my kennel but they aren't overpowering or overly aggressive. They hunt close and hard, handle well and (I think) run quite clean. But on good scenting they will push a hare HARD. Same with some cottontail hounds. George Edwards from PA had some cottontail hounds that could run with anything on the Large Pack circuit. No substitute for doing your homework and putting mileage on hunting boots and car tires to go see for yourself. One man's fast is another man's slow.

Harehounds
a little interesting side note today. Here in my part of Indiana it is near 10 windchill, about 18 degrees without the wind, 4 inches of snow over a thin layer of ice. I am running 2 females appx same age one cottontail breeding I made and one pure harehound by way of FC northern Tango. I am interested too see the noses. the most poweful nose I have seen on a hound is my bluetick male from cottontail breeding, compared to some of the hare hounds I have owned, or saw. I know this is just two specimens but I am curious too see if one displays a much superior nose to the other. will post results. Peace

Hare hound
Ran three today on about 1/2 inch of ice and 2 inches of snow. Hare hound from aforementioned post won hands down , nearly circling one and running the other 2 but not consistent. This was too be expected with the young harehound have not being had enough solo time and 1 season less experience than the cottontail hound. good luck and good running
