What studies did you make on crossing a rabbit and hare?
What do the offspring look like ,a hare is born with fur and near ready to eat grass
a rabbit is born looking like a litter of mice no fur so which one will
the offspring resemble?
I would like to read the study you did on cross breeding a HARE with a Rabbit
Cant be done if they do breed it would be just for fun

John O
Never did any studies myself, just read up on what others have done and the biological setup and DNA of rabbits vs hare.
From what I've read you are fine mixing a Belgium hare and a redback or dwarf or whatever because all of them are DNA disposed to hare. If you mix a redback or Belgium to a cottontail that's where you will get the sterile offspring. The chromosome structure doesn't add up. I've talked to several people that said theyve done it but never seen any that I would say were in fact 100% hare x rabbit and weren't sterile. All the rabbits I and most guys sell are in fact hare, not rabbits. We can mix them all we want but their DNA goes back the same. Some guys have found mixes that work out that give a better running rabbit or a more hardy one, but they still will not mix with a rabbit and produce a viable offspring. If you want I can link some articles I've found.

Rabbits have 44 chromosomes and true hare have 48. The Belgian Hare isn't a hare at all but a selectively bred domestic rabbit to closely resemble a hare. JACK rabbits are actually hare and they resemble a hare more than the rabbit. I would love to see what would happen trying to breed a wild Jack rabbit to a wild cottontail. I say it wouldn't be done and in the wild the law of natural selection would prevail. In captivity I suspect the two would fight and if there was no means of being totally separated one would kill the other. My friend tried to cross the breed I have with a wild cottontail he trapped and the fight was on. He said it was so bad he had to separate them to separate pens to keep from killing one another.

Yep. Have no problem admitting when I'm wrong and boy was I. After going back over the articles I have acquired concerning this it seems all were done in the UK. All were done with a "wild" rabbit and a hare. Beings they were in Europe this really was a rabbit to a rabbit. Wardog is right. The chromosomes won't match up. Breeding can happen. The embryo will develop, but will not be a viable birth. Usually the embryo will just not develop fully at all. I stand corrected.

Hello:
I am in the State of Ga. I been dealing with Rabbits,, of all type for Many years,, I am 76 years and own three starting pens one if big enough I call it a running pen.

I suppose they don't call me Daddy rabbit for nothing? These rabbit are o.k. for trying to start a pup,, but I can tell you right now, they Will Not make in in the Wild Running pens, her in Ga. they Hawks, Owls and many other critters that I have here on my property will clean them out, and in quick order, I at one time bred and tried to keep them, No
this Young mans (Pope Rabbits) but I tried ever kind that I could fins and Nothing, could stand the test of time, her at Rabbit Town, USA !

I use home made wooden rabbit boxies and catch over 100 Wild Cotton tail and an occasion catch an Ol Swamper ( that is a Hair) I turn ever one of these wild rabbits loose inside my starting pens or on the Outside, here as I own a big piece of property on creeks and one swamp.. I do have enough to run, anytime I turn the hounds loose. The Big Swampers were not here on this property, when I bought it 30 years ago,, by catching and releasing them I now have a good Supply..

Good Luck and just my .02 cents worth they fine for Short time,, but them pups better pay attention!

Keep Looking Up!
