In the limited trials I've been extra pop in a check will result in the hound to be picked.

I said, "once in a while". A dog that continually pops it's mouth in a check should be picked up.

I agree with you Casey.

Why does a good nose mean they bark in the check...regardless the hound or nose power...they should bark and advance the track as the scent permits. Good scent roll as quickly as they can....bad scent....where more nose is needed...AND THE PATIENCE TO USE IT....work as scent allows...walk if need be...then drive according to increased scent and close the gap on the game being chased.

In my opinion, barking excessively in the check is a big deal breaker for me. They need to shut up with loss of scent...ex. overrun... and go back to the point of loss quickly and efficiently then work from there.

Exactly right, but no dog is perfect. All are going to mess up, but a dog that continually messes up is faulty & will hinder the progress of the pack & needs eliminated.

I have a female that runs a medium speed, she has the nose and brains to walk out tracks and also to gear up when needed. She's never going to become a FCGD cause of lack of foot but I love that she is what Jim just described.

Different terrain needs different dogs ,rabbits that run like deer around here you better have dogs that can get up under them or you will see dogs cross one trail while rabbits three crossings over .
Come up here for spring LPH trials if you think our hounds can't roll when conditions allow.
