I'm like most, I don't have any extra money laying around that I don't know what to spend it on. When gas prices jump, I have to cut back somewhere else. Multiply that by millions of people and it is bound to have a negative affect on the economy, meaning fewer jobs, less overtime, less work for people who have their own business, and higher prices for everyone.
On the other hand...
The reason the car makers make and sell lots of gas hogs is because that is what people want. Drive down the freeway or to the store and you see lots of people all alone, driving big 4 wheel drive SUV's. Everyone in the suburbs has at least one parked in their three stall garage. That is the only thing that has kept Ford and GM afloat this long, they can't compete with Toyota and Honda on selling cars. Americans like to have big trucks and big houses. Most of us buy bigger than we need.
Someone mentioned Europe and diesels, the reason they have them is because they have a high gas tax. "Europe has an average fuel economy for its new-car fleet of more than 40 miles per gallon. The European Union years ago amassed support among members for high taxes on gasoline, which drove a swift migration from big cars to smaller cars and to diesel fuel."
Until something like that happens here don't hold your breath, things probably won't change much. The government doesn't have near as much to do with it as you and I do, and I will disconect the internet and get rid of this computer before I will stop loading my dogs in the pickup to go hunting
