There's nothing wrong with that except I don't have a chair, a reeses cup and a cup of coffee while this is happening.Goduece wrote: Some days we may hunt with only one other person, and none of us are great shots, so the chase may last for hours. Theres nothing wrong with that.
How do you break a dog from hunting wide?

Re: How do you break a dog from hunting wide?
i hunt hare - i always thought i liked a dog that hunts close-- -
till i read this thread- ----when i say close, i mean ..always starts where i can hear him--
if hes not running , i want to see him occasionally, i like dogs that are busy but hunt with me-- i hate lazy dogs-- but i want a little control over them- i like to be able to direct them where i think we could jump a hare- dogs and i are a team-i also hate a couple hard headed young dogs just running thru the woods ramming around--- that isnt hunting ,lol - --
100 yards - --seems very close to me--- -- we do have some cover that the dog doesnt need to be 100 yards away most the time to get a start -- if your dog ranges out a half mile ---how many rabbits or hare did it run past to get there- ???
anyways---
you want to make the dog hunt closer--- ---hunt him alone- ,or with close dogs - teach him to come when called--
use a shock collar to enforce that=-
hunt the hair off him ---call him in occasionally -, praise him up - send him back out , - just keep doing it- -- dont expect to change a 4 year old overnite - dont expect to change EVERY dog-
but if he has half a brain and bonds with you -- good chance you can get him hunting closer-
getting a dog to hunt closer---is easier than getting one to hunt farther -
ive got one dog that if i havent seen her in maybe 15 minutes--- or if i called or whistle and she doesnt appear in just a few minutes--- ill just stop and listen for her cause i KNOW she has some scent and is about to jump-
-- i can walk in any direction and know that she she will come and find me about every 15 minutes
if she isnt running-- i like to start my pups with that dog

Took my four yeat old male and ran with Goduece and Buckshot(the dog in question). Nothing wrong with the dogs hunt or his style. just needs E-collar to remind him to come in.
