I agree, That's why I believe pedigree an genetics are important to a breeding program, some lines have continued to keep producing very well over the years through their offspring an their offspring's offspring etc etc. I'm not saying that pedigree an genetics are everything, but it's a tool that breeders can use to increase their chances of success.

I only ever heard of the "Flavor of the Month " at my local Dairy Queen. Def sounds like a cheap shot to any hound or line.I would rather consider breeding to the hound of the year or line of the decade ,that has offspring on the ground which run the way I like. But I think I understand what your trying to ask ????

I always assume flavor of the month as bloodline with the most win for the month. Winter, spring, summer, and fallet all have different flavor. I have seen winter hound get beaten in the summer and vice versa. Breeding to flavor of the month won't go wrong. It has to be one of those stud that is competing for sire of the year or hound of the year.

A lot of sire of year are also flavor of the month. Just to name a few that I could think of are shooter, oliver, viagra, reggie, Ranger dan, alibaba and so on. Could someone please tell me which stud is not a rabbit dog and not worth the title akc field champion? I have heard good things about all the stud I mention.

Flavor of the month is the Title earned by newly crowned Field Champion that dominated the competition and can't produce his likeness. They are offered at stud and the newbie beaglers are in a frenzy to "get some of that". If the dog doesn't produce he is soon forgotten and disappears from the board. The only remembrance are his trophies and the worthless off spring that flood the "Beagle For Sale" board.
The Flavor of the month dog is usually hyped by owner and his friends. Soon he is unloaded to a sucker at an inflated price.. Then the cycle starts again.

There are many many hounds that have had great success in field trials an went on to become outstanding producers. Jack of all trades,Ninja,Mountain Man,Shaker,Striker,Ranger Dan,Lumber Jack,Viagra,Shooter, etc etc.. Beaglers would've never had the opportunity to breed to these great studs if they weren't promoted by field trials. Does every cross work? Ofcourse not,but some do. Viagra x Satsuma Sadie II is a cross that comes to mind,a lot of people would've never tried making this cross, but just so happens this cross produced 7 FC's I've had the opportunity to see 4 of them run an their sure enough rabbit dogs.

Well said...and how do you measure old Joe up in someone's back yard?? You go watch him and go off of hearsay. Trials expose the posers and make the good ones notable.
Does being a FC make a stud dog? HECK NO...but I will take my chances with the quality a FC has shown as opposed to some back yard legend....JMO.

They are a measuring stick no matter what others think....are they your "style" maybe not, but that doesn't mean they aren't a good hound in someone's eyes....and if judges think they are good and they fit the "style" I like, I am taking them over some back yard dog any and every day. IF and I MEAN IF they fit the qualifications of what I want and there offspring show those traits..... and further more....does the family or line of dogs show the traits I like.

How does any dog become the "flavor of the month"....trial results whether you like that or not....and people who believe they can get what they like from them...BE IT for personal use or for the WALLET...as in puppy sales.

my opinions only....

I breed to stud dogs that prove to me that they are worthy of breeding my bitches to...regardless what they have done in trials. Im here to produce rabbit dogs not the best pedigree.
