running pens- vs--in the wild-

Post by snowshoehareguide »

do you send your dogs to a running pen--? im running dogs for a few people in the wild--no pen- - tons of hare- - i run garmin alpha collars AND telemetry-- - miles from the tar- - i have room for a few more- im trying to make this a full time thing between hunting seasons-- been a lot of fun so far--ran ten days so far this month im in northeast vt i realize there are more risks with no pen but maybe some advantages too--im looking for dogs to condition more than i am to train-- i dont mind starting young pups not messed with-i start all my own dogs and my feeling is the good ones only need to be exposed to game- i just drive the truck , no tame rabbits or pens full of bunnies- they will go to the woods ALOT

i just got a video camera- this is my very first video uploaded to you tube-- dogs from 3 customers represented -

Do the squeally mouth hounds call in the coyotes more than the regular chop/bawl or is there a difference? I've watched a number of the coyote hunting clips and some of their calls sound squeally.
I tried to download some clips over a yr ago and it took for ever to load, is it any better now?
Good luck with your program, some fine country your running.

In Michigan, we have a "quiet time" from April 15 to July 8th where you can't
run your dogs, except in designated field trial areas or if you have a training permit. I have a permit, so I run on my property year round. I used a pen to get a dog started, but I usually start them on wild stuff. This dog just got started late so I wanted to be sure he had rabbits. He's doing very well now with my other dogs. Good luck with you endeavor.

Running in the wild will be better for the dogs, but a large pen is ideal around here with all the roads & coyotes to worry about. I run in my 30 acre pen most of the time. Have to wait until it cools down at night to run now.

Build my first pen in 87. Have to say, put 4 good dogs on a pen rabbit that has been run a lot and if you can stay on that rabbit, Running in the wild is easy. But thats a pen with not many rabbits. A pen full of rabbits or place will make any dog look good. A pen with not many rabbits is a good place to see what your dogs can really do. I heard this a lot. Rabbit Earl you need some more rabbits in that pen. Why you don t need but one rabbit. Some guys want a rabbit behind ever tree. I see this a lot. Run one and throw him away and be right back on a nother and same thing and after about 4 hr. The man comes out with his dogs and talk about how good they run. hey I ve been there and done that. It will come that you always looking a place with plenty of rabbits. Around here its just not that way in the wild in hunting season. Were are the rabbits. Then when you jump one you have to stay on him. Just my two cents on it.

If you have places to hunt with plenty of rabbits. You have been bless.
