Hello John,
I have a Blue Sly dog that is about 5 yrs old and placed 9th at the 2004 world hunt ,he is a true rabbit dog. I don't trial as much as i would like but he only needs 10 pts to champion out. He is out of Blue Sly's Bandit x White Oak Creek Bunji Jump. Blue Sly's Sophie placed 4th in the champs at the world hunt this year if im'e not mistaken

Can someone tell me why speed is so important?
What is wrong with medium speed dogs with line control?
I have never seen too many dogs that have a great deal of speed, have line control.

I have proved so many times to different hunters that a medium speed dog with line control can circle a rabbit in less time than a super fast dog without line control { under the same hunting conditions }

I know a lot of people out there will argue this time and time again.

I have run and judged dogs for 50 years now and I still prefer dogs that have line control over speed.

I still respect everyone’s likes and dislikes.... Just and old timer thoughts

I've never ran against a medium speed dog that could circle a rabbit faster then dogs I have. Almost all med/med fast akc trial dogs in my area. Usually my dogs pull out and maintain 200+ yard leads and it's a one dog race. I have a faster end dog (one in my avatar) that will out run all in my area and run tighter line then most slower dogs. He can run rabbits in conditions most can't and is smart enough to turn on the heat where he can on the line. Maybe you just haven't ran against good fast dogs? Cause you wont find a medium speed dog that will circle a rabbit faster then my dogs.

Buckridge, you don't need speed to kill rabbits. I don't hunt just to keep meat in the freezer. I hunt because I love to see and hear a good race. Medium speed is boring. I get all the boring I can stand just trying to make a living. I like to see the rabbit running for his life with a hound or better yet, a pack tied to it and making the rabbit run all out WITHOUT losing it. Now that is fun.
Hounds like this are hard to come by, but they DO exist. In my opinion, a dog that can run a rabbit realy fast and still maintain contact with the line is the top of the line in the beagle world. They have to be very good at everything and have the right build and conformation to perform like this. They also have to have a much better than average nose and be smarter than most beagles to be able to do this.
Watching a hound like this run on a day when conditions are at there best is what gives me something to look forward to and keeps me coming back.
