I had a bitch like this that at a young age would do the same thing, wasn't bred like your hound but it was a confidence thing with her. Once she got older she started to come out of it more and more until the day she was hit in the rd. Give her time and a lot of tracks. Better to start tight than babbling all over.

I agree with Smitty! I don't think this trait is limited to any one line of dogs at all. I have a female here out of FC Sulivan's Sherlock Holmes and a bitch directly out of Ninja. When she was about your pups age, she'd have the line, and run quite a distance without opening. I was about to get rid of her, and my Wife, who at the time was a so called "novice" made me keep the dog. She wanted her own dog to trial with so I agreed. At about fourteen months old, she really began to turn it on, opening when she should, and doing it right. Huge mouth, good line control, and I sure am glad we kept her! Just have patience, and with our dog anyways, she seemed to really pick it up after we began to pack her a bit more. Good luck!

How close is Gene's breeding? I have a 11 month old pup outta Chief and Stormie that I just got back from Troxell's for conditioning. He and 2 other dogs(both directly outta Casey) came back with their noses and mouthes COMPLETELY worn down to raw blood and flesh. I have owned others from Casey and none have showed this trait. Just give her time I don't think you'll regret it. Dawgy

Dawgy, Are you sure you didn't just hit the brakes a tad to hard a few times on the way home? LOL Give me a call, and we'll go run pups! Bill.

i would say it is just confidence 9 months is to young to say tight mouthed just yet my male when he started was tight mouthed now he is just right opens when he is sure he can run the rabbit not just when he smells one which is how i like them but i would say she will probly get better with time.

I agree- very few hounds show as much mouth at that age as they will after a full season of hunting. Mouthy dogs on the other hand are apt to get worse. Beagleman, Sherlock Holmes had LOTS of mouth on the line and threw this in most of his pups. Not saying too much mouth, but when he locked on to a hare, everyone knew it. I saw him run a LOT as well as several offspring. I really admired that hound. Good luck with the pup!
