Scared to death

Post by goes1 »

This morning I was on the phone while my girl "Nut" was outside doing her business, she takes a little longer these days because she is 60+ days pregnant, I walk away from the door to check the calendar, finish my conversion and hang up. I go outside to get her and she is gone.
Now at first I'm thinking she must have come back inside, so I look all over the house, under beds, in closest, anywhere could look I looked. Then I start searching the neighborhood, people are all over the place and no one saw anything. I search and search driving all over looking for her. but I keep saying to myself there is no way she could have gotten this far, she is as big as a house and runs out of breathe just walking outside to do her business. I come home and search all over again. She's nowhere. I print up "LOST" flyers and drive all over putting them up all while asking folks if they had seen her. I get done I drive to the Stray animal facility and no one had turned her in. I figure I have done all I can do. I come back home, call and call and whistle and call for her but nothing. After about an hour of being home I go outside (can't smoke inside...lol) and as I am sitting and trying to calm down I hear this rustle. I go over and search all around this big tarp in the corner of the yard, thinking AHA I found her, but she wasn't there. A couple of hours later I return outside, again while sitting there I hear this rustle, I go back to the tarp and who's head pops out and scares the bejesus out of me. Yep, it's Nut. She had herself so buried in there that even when I picked part of it I never saw her.
Well alls well that ends well but I must admit, I was scared and very upset. She was never more than 10 feet away from me when I stood on the back porch and called and whistled for her over and over again.

Thanks for reading

Nut's actions are a nesting type behaviour & is common among bitches ready to whelp. That is why it is advised not to leave a bitch who is near her due date alone, even for a minute. I once had one get under our house trailer & she did me the same way (called & no response). I had to call my husband home from work to search for her! She too was only a stone's throw away from me the whole time. GRRRRRR.

So .... I learned my lesson on that & always put my expecting bitches on chains or runners to use the potty, even if they were in a fenced yard. A few years later however, another gyp we had crawled under our porch (she was on a chain she so she couldn't get under our house. But she tried. lol.) & whelped during a potty break. Her pups later died of exposure.

In short I guess what I am trying to say is NEVER EVER leave an expecting bitch alone, even for a few minutes. It will only lead to trouble.

But live & learn. Glad you found Nut!!! :D

I'm glad you found your dog. I have a dog that I bought off a neighbor down the road who never had time to take him running so every once in awhile he will get out of his kennel while i'm feeding him and he always gos over to his house and lays down where his old chain used to be and whines. I feel sorry for him, but it is just a little humerous sometimes.
