temp to turn on kennel heaters

I live in PA.
it hasn't really got very cold yet. We've seen mid 30's a night or two, but that wasn't even two nights in a row, yet. how cold do you let it get before you turn on your heat in the kennel?
I have two dogs kenneled together. I'll be using a light bulb in a big soup can for a heater when it gets cold enough.

Your gonna cause yourself alot of problems, this is the time of year that dogs build up the winter coat,if you DON`T ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN,then your you are effecting their body ajusting to the seasons,
All you need is a cover over the door, and a closed in(DRAFT) free,box,insulated if you wish........ Now if your have a blizzard,then MAYBE help them out. Good luck !!! JMO

I live in the mountains of North Central PA. Sometimes it gets real cold, I have seen below zero for a couple of weeks. I do not use a heater at all and I think it is Unnecessary especially if you have 2 hounds bunking together. Just keep the wind off of them make sure they have plenty of water and they will be fine. We feed 2x a day in the winter and soak their food to be sure they are hydrated. If you really want to use the heater I would wait until the temps are below zero.

I agree w/ everyone else so far. I don't worry about it unless it gets to 10 or 20 below. Then I'll just bring them in for the night. Otherwise they'll lose their winter coats. I would think.

just curious - what do you guys use for flaps & how do you keep dogs from chewing them off ???

The best flaps I have used is pieces of old conveyer belt . It is too tough for dogs to chew up. I am also a big believer in useing heated water pails in the winter for all my animals. Most will drink less when water is near freezeing and their guts dry out causeing all sorts of bad things. I feed morning and night to keep them warmer .

I put a light bulb in when the temperature drops bellow 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Then I adjust the temperature by changing bulb wattages. My boxes are all insulated so I use a 40-watt bulb to start out with and go up to 100-watt bulbs if it drops bellow freezing.
