In reading the Indiana Hunting & Trapping Guide i find nothing about needing a license to run dogs in the off season. I have never thought you needed one but my buddies say you do. What you guys think? How about other states?

In Idaho, you need a license if you are in pursuit of game. I guess there is always the possibility that the dog will catch the rabbit... Here you only need a basic hunting license ($11.50) to hunt rabbits, coyotes and other pest animals. Yes, the rabbit is considered a pest animal because of all the jackrabbits around. You have to add to your basic hunting license if you intend on taking upland game, water-fowl, migratory birds and, of course, big game.

We can hunt jacks all year round here, but it just gets too darn hot and bone dry in the summer to run a dog.

Page 10 of the Tennessee Hunting and Trapping Guide, under the heading, Dog Training, specifies that a hunting liscense is required for training bird dogs, rabbit dogs, and fox hounds. An additional permit is required on WMA lands.

Here in Indiana, the way it reads in the rules is: If you are in pursuit of game you need a lisencse. Season or not, it is pursuit of game.

In Illinois, it's kind of ambigious. You talk to one conservation officer and he says no you don't need a license, talk to another and he says yes you do. Since I have to have one sooner or later to hunt anyway, I always make sure to keep it current and avoid any problems when I'm just running the dogs.

Where do you see that rock bottom. Im like the other poster i have to buy one anyhow but i usually wait till season starts. Its really no big deal i just like to argue with my buds.

The CO's where I run my dogs out of season will check your license. I also asked if I could carry a gun in case Coyotes tried to bother the dogs. Answer was if you got a gun your hunting and I will arrest you.

In Vt you can't run your dogs from March 15 through June 1st. Beagle clubs need special permit but they can run during that period. I think it has something to do with the young hare being born in this time frame.

WELL I HAVER NEVER HAD ONE IN AL MY DAYS BUT I USUALLY HAVE LICENCE SINCE I TURKEY HUNT BUT NONE OF MY FRIENDS HAVE A PERMIT TO RUN EITHER!AND THEY RUN MORE THAN ME!

The Indiana Hunting and Trapping guide doesn't come right out and say point blank but if you put things together you can get an idea. I have questioned that before in the past but when I started coon hunting numerous years ago I got that question answered by the conservation officers attending one of the hunts. If you look on page 4 under Hunting seasons for furbearers it shows the dog running as a season. On page 3 under license EXEMPTIONS it states you must carry a valid license to HUNT any wild animal with the exception as follows "Residents or non-residents participating in a field trial sanctioned by the DNR director. I know this is still confussing as on page 5 under definitions it states that HUNT is to take any wild animal but if you look it up in the dictionary the definition of HUNT is to search out, seek, to drive or chase esp. by harrying and the pursuit of game, among others. I know now you are even more confussed but I was told by the conservation officer any time you are in pursuit of game you have to have a valid hunting license unless you are competing in a night hunt or trial. They then give you a permit to carry stating that you are competing in a DNR sanctioned hunt that takes the place of a license for both resident and non-residents. Every sanctioned event I ever attended it was illegal to harvest game. Since then I always purchase a license even though I hunt mainly on my own property. I also called and asked how much property a person had to own to meet the license exemption for a landowner. I was told if you could hunt on it then you didn't need a license but if you stepped off of it you better have a valid license. Hope I didn't make this more confussing.

In Illinois and I believe Indiana is the same, a club that holds any type of Field trial is required by law to send in to the DNR for a permit to hold any field trial. Failure to do this will get you a BIG fine and some jail time along with possibly some unhappy folks from out of state. Im not sure exactly what all the purposes of these permits are but one is that it covers people from out of state that come to your hunt that do not have a hunting license for your state. These permits do not cost anything but in Illinois and Indiana its a law that you have to have them!
As far as just running dogs by yourself or with some buddies all you need is a current hunting liscense.

In NC you must also have a valid hunting license to run dogs during the off-season. As far as field trials conducted in NC, I am aware that if you are a non-resident and are in NC attending a field trial, the NC WRC (wildlife resources commission) will honor other states hunting licenses, ONLY for the purpose of partaking in a field trial. So my understanding is that here in NC, if you come here to a trial from another state, you must have a valid hunting license, wether from NC or your home state. Either will suffice.

Now to just be out running dogs, you must have a valid NC small-game hunting license.
