My dad has two hounds that are getting pretty thin. He has wormed and added feed. He said he just can't get weight put on them is it just due to the time of year. I have hear of a few dogs doing this this year is there something going around? any help would help

If they dont get enough water this will happen. You might invest in some heated water bowls

If it is cold in your part of the country, the dogs can loose weight if food isn't increased. It takes more energy for them to keep warm. May also be your brand of food. Read some of the threads about food and also check under health. Someone else had trouble with a thin dog and there are lots of suggestions there. Carolyn

What are you feeding? Also, how much have you increased your food?

Have stool checked by vet for whip worms. They can be hard to detect in the stool and can raise heck with the dog. Hope this helps. Hare

I always put warm water in their bowls when I feed them. Get some Panecure wormer as this is good against whipworms, I also worm with Heartgaurd Plus, this contains Ivermectin and works as an intestinal wormer aswell...Try the above and switch to some premium food, winter hunting season I use 30/20 ratio of Eukanuba Premium Performance. This keep weight on dogs no matter how cold or hard you run them and they should be free of all parasites.....

I agree with the water deal. I always add alot of warm water this time of the year to insure they get enough water and who doesn't enjoy a warm meal when it's cold.

If the dogs are hunted hard and a lot in the winter, it is difficult to keep weight on them. They burn up a lot of calories running rabbits. But, if they are thin and not getting hunted extra hard, there are a variety of possible causes. Take a stool sample to a vet, feed them more and higher quality dog food, and make sure they have a warm, draft free, dog box with a lot of straw in it. I soak my dog food this time of the year to insure they get enough water.

What kind of dog food are you feeding? I have had the same problem in the past. I now feed Black Gold and haven't had a problem. That junk they sale at Wal Mart is what I had fed, and I could not keep the weight on. So, you may want to evaluate your feed.
