daybreak, We used to jump a swamper every once in a while when hunting the Ohio River bottoms in Western Ky., along the Kentucky and Illinois border. That was over 20 years ago, so I don't know if there are any there now. I have never heard of anyone who raises swampers.

I read an article once that said the the Sloughs was covered up with swampers.I went 3 times before I finally found a swamper but that race made all trips worth it.If I hadnt seen the swamper come up out of a drainage ditch when they jumped it I would have thought they were running a fox.
Also I have heard the Painter boys talking about running swamp rabbits on Peabody around Central City,Ky.I dont hunt that part of Peabody so I dont know. However Wayne and Pat Dorrow run that part of the country quite a bit so they may be able to tell you if there are any swampers there.I think either or both of them may come to this board from time to time.I have seen Wayne post on the Better Beagling board several times so you also may find him over there.

Sometimes when you hunt in an area that has Cottontails and Swamp rabbits, especially if it a lot of water, your dogs won't find any swamp rabbits as they are hunting where they have been successful jumping Cottontails.
A Swamp dog will hunt the water, every stump and roots and will swim from one to another if the water is deep. They will also look under the bank overhangs. I have gone behind packs and mine would jump plenty that they passed up. Especially dogs down here from up north.

I am going with a guy from work to Central City in January, he is from there. I have heard that Peabody is covered up in rabbits but difficult to kill any, for it is so thick with cover. We are gonna try it anyway.
