dew claws on pure breed beagles

Some folks around the country shy away from them, they think some where in there breeding something just is'nt quite right??/ YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS

They are missinformed. the reason manny purebreed beagles don't have dew claws is because they are sugicaly removed at about three days after birth iether for show or foe the avoidance of the dew claw getting hung up on things and torn and then becoming infected. Dogs that are born without dew claws is more of a rarething that anything else.

I think you are talking about dewclaws on the back legs, which is not common on hounds. I was surprised to see one of my purebred AKC pups had them , then I began to notice them on a few other beagles around some of the trials.

I have hasd pups in a litter born with dew claws on the back legs while other pups in the same litter did not.

Rear dew claws are inherited as an autosomal recessive. They are not uncommon in beagles. We remove both fronts and rears (if they have rears) at 3 to 6 days of age by sniping them off just behind the joint with surgical scissors or pinching them off with a small curved forceps. Prefer the forcep method and have used it the most in recent years.
