Has anyone tried to fashon a tail guard for your hounds?
My poor male's tail is wrecked!! I'm thinking about trying to make him a brush guard for his tail to protect it a bit.
Wondering if anyone has tried this.

I have seen duct tape a time or two, but couldn't tell you how it worked.

I tried some gauze and tape, could not keep it on.
I'm going to try to make a sleeve and see how that works.

Try putting some Liquid Skin on it before you take him to the field, let it dry before putting him on the ground.

Try shrink wrap, if it doesn't work it may dock the tail for you, and inadvertantly solve your problem.

Pink ointment might help to heal it faster. You may end up having to dock the last inch or so! Carolyn

Around these parts, a dog with 2 inches of raw meat at the end of its tail, is considered a keeper.
If it gets to the point that the dog is bleeding so bad that it gets week, they usually dock the tail.

Try shrink wrap? Are you talking about heat shrink tubing?!

I made some out of deer hide once and attached them wire the plastic wire ties - too much trouble to put on and take off and not fully effective. I dock the tails (with a castration band) now - whatever ends up hairless - normally 1 to 2 inches.

Had a good female that swung her tail from side to side instead of straight up over her back. At the end of a hunt she was blood from her ears back. One year she had a good 4" that was all scab and ugly. Took her to the vet and they wrapped it with that stretchy surgical tape from the tip of her tail to her butt. Then wrapped it with regular white medical tape. I didn't think it would work or that she would leave it alone. She acted like it wasn't even there. Ran her like that for the last 3 weeks of the season. Worked great!

That sticky stuff is called vet wrap and if you buy it at a farm supply place it is cheaper than at the vet. You can get it in many colours and I know how much you guys pay attention to colour when you dress your hounds! lol Then use white tape over top. Carolyn
