Looking to get a whistle for recalling my dogs. What do you recommend, the whistles w/ a pea, w/o a pea, or a silent dog whistle?

I've got both. Remington makes a steel whistle with pea and also the silent type,, That Ain't Silent I might add!!! They work good either way.

I use a Roy Gonia Special with pea. Blow it every time you feed when dogs are young then transfer to field with a small treat when they come. Works well when you start young.

I have been useing a whistle for a long time and I like the ones that I get at gander mt. they are in hiking dept. they have the pea in them,and are metal. I use med pitch and it is very loud and clear, and they are under #2.00 . PS better hide them from the kids.

I like the Roy Goia pealess, just easier on my ears, not as loud as the pea whistle. I don't like the metal whistles in the winter, they'll freese to your lips and hurts like heck when you try to remove them.

Been using whistle for years. Used to officiate basketball and use an Acme Thunderer, it's metal and loud. If it sticks to your lip can get a rubber cover for it or buy a plastic model. It is a little higher pitched. You can get them with a pea or without. Or with a "poop" for a price. I train as mentioned. When young with food or a treat. Works good!

Bill Boatman carries a quality silent dog whistle ( not really silent..lol) that you can adjust the pitch on. Works real well. It is steel but I keep it on a lanyard around my neck inside my coat and it stays nice and warm. Have you given any thought to a hound horn ? I got one from Jewel of the Horn and there's just something special about puting that horn to your mouth and blowin' them hounds in. A very pleasing sound to the ears too, IMO. Good luck, CHH

lol crewchief, It just gets cold enough to freeze a metal whistle to my lips,doesn't have to be super cold to give a good chillin to a thin piece of metal. The pea also freezes inside the whistle as well. This has been an exceptionly mild winter, January was unbelievable for what I'm used to. Only had 3 days so far below zero, normally we get a week or two where it never gets above zero..Haven't had the snow shoes out this year ....yet
Feb Mar is usually our biggest snow months.

We're supposed to have a real hot summer as well.both days will be in the eighties!!!!!~

If this is Libby Gates web site she makes a quality horn. I got one for my first time off them last year. My hounds respond to a horn much better than a whistle.

MY WIFE BOUGHT ME A GOAT HOUND HORN FOR CHRISTMAS. EASY ON THE EARS AND MY SIX MONTH OLD PUPS RESPOND TO IT WELL. NOTHING LIKE A GOOD HOUND HORN.

Heck with all that junk, just like we use to do years ago, just blow through the barrel of your old single barrel shot gun.

Seriously i do use the whistles peas and they work fine, like some one said you can get a rubber cover for them in the cold weather, i guess i will put mine on today cause the snow is coming down like crazy, got 3'' on the ground and the wind chill is going to get to about 20 this evening, and more snow is on it's way,but were gonna run them anyway, can't wait.

P.S. Oh if you decide to use the single barrel method, please take the shell out first.LOL

I’ve used whistles for training beagles, birddog, retrievers, coonhounds, & squirrel dogs since the early 1980’s. My favorite whistle is the FOX 40 Beadles whistle. It didn’t free up, and it was as louder than any whistle made. But even if I cupped my hands in a funnel shape as to direct the sound out away from my ears, if I really blew it loudly it hurt my ears and everyone’s around me.

As far a birddogs and retriever go a whistle is fine, because they are rarely range far enough for me to need to blew that loud.

As for my beagles, coon dogs, and squirrel dogs I use a “9 inch goat hunting horn”. The volume carries father than any whistle. My dogs seam to come exceptionally well to it, and the horn doesn’t hurt my or anyone else’s ears. The hunting horns volume just seams to carry great. I’ve had others hunters hunting miles away from me say they heard me loud and clear, and they were not down wind of me either.
