Why not use a regular treadmill? Used to work at a reseach facility and they had one that was for "canines" and it was very expensive.. We ended up modifying regular treadmills by building a 2' tall x 2'w x 4'L box out of lexan that was mounted just above the belt of the treadmill. This allowed the beagles to run on it unrestrained. The canine version had a cross bar with a short lead that you hooked the dog to.. The dogs seemed to prefer the box to the lead. Once they had been on it a time or two they didn't seem to want to try and get out either. Kind of hard to jump off of ground that is moving anyway..
Another thing they found out was that the dogs really didn't respond well to one that was designed to be powered by the dogs walking or running on them.. Most just stood or sat down. Since I'm full of ideas this morning I want to throw this out also-- would it be a good idea to rig up a merry go round similar to what is used to do pony rides at the fair so you could exercise more than one at a time? Think about using harnesses instead of collars also. not alot of chance to choke one or break their neck..

BH,

That's an idea, however about a year ago there was a website that sold 1-5 dog treadmills. I thought someone might remember it.

Big Head,
I like the merri -go- round idea and if you put a rabbit in one of the harnesses I bet they would run it right into the ground.

Wow, someone has been reading my mind. I was looking at a Horse exersizer last week and wondering how hard it would be to minuturize something like that to exersize dogs with. It was much like a merri-go-round also and could have four horses hooked to it. Drive was bi-direcional and could be reversed so that the muscles on both sides of the body could be built up.

I copied what your talking about of a birddog handler over 12 yrs ago. It works great, but it now takes up more room than I have. At one time I had birddogs, retrievers, and beagles, but now I just have beagles.

This is the one I see trainers and handlers use the most. Perhaps a little pricey but, well made. http://www.jogadog.com/

Thanks Windkist,

I visited that website yesterday. I know there is a person that makes or sells the treadmills to order where 3-4 dogs can be exercised at once. This was a year or two ago. Depending on the number of dogs determined the price of the treadmill. It was around 1200-1500 for a 3 or 4 dog treadmill. I may go to Walmart and buy 5 treadmills for $99 each and modify them for dogs. Four for them and one for me.

I know a guy who used one of them training rings that you use for breaking horses. He had it set up for about 6 dogs I think, had an electric motor with a gear reduction unit . I have looked into trying to build one of them but I had problems with the gear reduction and was unable to find an economical way of setting the rpm's of the engine to meet the RPM needed for the wheel to turn.

Here is a link to purchase.
