Gun Dogs?

Does anyone still raise/breed/hunt "down home", "run what you brung", "good ole" gun dogs? I don't mean to cause a stir or ruckus, but it seams alot of these dogs are inflated for breeding purposes and profit. I have all AKC registered hounds so dont think that I am bashing the pedigreed or trial hounds.

What do most of you guys consider a good gun dog? As far as speed and nose? Again dont think that I am bashing any one certain hound. It is just an honest question. I hunt the same dogs I trial and have some titled dogs here. Would just like to here what everyone else thinks. Thanks

I like a good medium speed dog. Ideally, it wouldn't have many losses and would run steady. It would bring that rabbit around to the gun but not so fast that it streaks by me like a low flying aircraft and I can't get a shot off at it. Honest mouth, no off game, no backtracking, good nose, gears to slow down when needed... That's what I want, and for the most part what I have.

But that is just me. :)

I like a dog that you can set down with anyone and not have to make excuses, not saying I have those but its what I like.

I have got an akc reg.female here that a guy gave me.She wasn't trained or nothing. She didn't even know her own name. She is just out of local dogs around here.I wouldn't take no less than $1200 for her.She hasn't never been to a trial or nothing.I hardly ever, ever brag on my dogs but this bitch CAN GET THE JOB DONE!!! I'm going to breed her to my buddy's leroy dog to try & slow the speed down just a notch, leroy is out of brinsky's tank dog.

I invite you to come and run with me. I will run anything I have or even go borrow one that I don't have here. We will run any style dog that you bring and have a good time.

Emery described my best. He is mediam speed, runs know trash, honest mouth, Will work A loss untel he finds it keeps bringing the rabbit back untel you kill it. He handles great, uses his mouth correctly, I raised him owned his mother she was same type of dog only smaller. Roy

I love a dog that I can let the tailgate down and take a seat and the dog goes out and jumps a rabbit and brings it back around, smoother the better but rabbits are smart and tried and true survivalist so I know a dog won't be able to run it without a loss unless they are so slow they can't over-run but when the loss occurs they can find it quickly and move him again. I like a med to med-fast..

JMHO but from what I own and what I've run with the best all around, "old fashioned" hounds are the medium to upper med. speed ones. I'm talking about hounds that go back to the OLD bloodlines - Gay, Skullfork, Pearson Creek, Yellow Creek, Buzz Bomb, Hanks Jo Jo Blue, Gunsmoke ... I'm not talking about walkie talkies, but true med speed hunting dogs.

Some of these lines had some serious faults but one thing they all have is HUNT and HEART. Those are, to me, the kind of gundogs that'll keep on chasing a bunny with three broken legs :-o I have Branko, Gay, and one male that goes back to Emmons Blue Streaker. He may not be winning any beauty contests, but he's exactly the type of hound you're asking about. A die hard, born and bred gundog. Honestly, he's taught my Branko bitch a thing or two. When she goes off the line becuase she's in such a rush to get that bunny, he's the one who is calm and collected, taking his time, getting it right.
My 2 cents.

Where are some of these "gun dog" breeders located?

I know know where some are in WV and in Pike Co., KY, and VA. But would like to hear of some more.

I didn't know there was a difference,I gun all my dogs and Trial them to. I belive its what a person likes as to what they run,med speed to fast, there are hounds of all speeds that do it right. I personly like them med fast that can jump Rabbits and bring them to the gun solo or in a pack.
