Fellow Rabbit Hunters & Beaglers,
October 2006 is approximately 2 months away. We would like to know who all’s interested in going on an October 2006 Iowa Rabbit Hunt. Approximate cost of the trip per person; hunting licenses $90, lodging $25 a person per night, and fuel $300 for the group. So approximate cost per person would be $265 (not counting food) for a 5-day hunt. My crew cab pick-up will haul 6 men.
I ordered an Iowa Sportsman’s Atlas about 5 months ago. It was the most resent version that’s out at the time. I was told in August they’re would be a new updated version out. I’ve also been in contact with many state biologists in Iowa. We should be looking at a great hunt. About 11 years ago I did an Iowa rabbit hunt with 3 other Beaglers. We shot 160 in our group over a four-day period.
There are only 6 spots for hunters on this trip, unless we make up two separate groups. So far as of right now, we have about 6 to 8 Beaglers that are considering the trip. But only two have confirmed going. If you are interested in getting in on an Iowa Rabbit Hunt contact me soon. We would like to know by mid August who’s all interested in the October hunt. We will be running medium speed to good medium speed hounds. Mostly UBGF & MAB style hounds. We don’t want trash running to be a big issue. So for this reason if you have trashy hounds please don’t consider bringing them.
If you live in Indiana or East, my hometown is about in the crossroads while heading west towards Iowa. If you’d be interested and it will work out we could all go together to save fuel cost? I have a Ford F-350 Crew Cab, and I can transport all the dogs in my trailer.
Contact me by August 15, 2006 if you interested.

Keystone Kid I have been making the trip out to Iowa for about 6 years now and have learned a lot over that time period about hunting Iowa. I strongly recommend that you wait until November for the following reasons:
The farmers will be getting in corn then, but there will be a lot of standing corn left. Standing corn is good for listening to dogs run, but no good for killing rabbits as you will never get the dogs out of the corn and the rabbits will not come out once entering. Every rabbit you jump will head straight for the corn if it is still standing and a lot of them will be bedded down in the standing corn
For the last couple of years Iowa has been hot or warm up until the 1st or 2nd week of November. I went the first week of November last year and it got up into the 60s the last couple of days. I have better luck with weather the 2nd week of november.
I guess I have been lucky because I have only run into bow hunters once since I have been going and there was no confrontation that time. I would suggest hunting during the week as there are less bow hunters in the woods during the week.
Hope this hellps and good luck
