I have to slow my dogs down.

Been to a few field trials lately and my dog runs the rabbit and doesn't lose it and sometimes gets a full lap ahead of the other dogs and the judge picks him up cuz he says he is running too much rabbit. He handles good and retreives too and is a good jump dog and hardly ever loses a rabbit or has very long checks but the judge says he is too fast so I am looking for a real good and real slow hound to breed to his pups. Any help would be great. I also want to give this no account dog away because I ain't feeding nothing the judge don't like. I shot over 200 rabbits with him and one of his daughters last year so can tell you he ain't gun shy. His only fault is when he ain't hunting he lays around a lot. Thanks in advance for any help you got for me.

See a psychiatrist. Find out the reason a man would feed a dog that satisfied somone else and give away one that he likes. A psychiatrist fee of $100./hr would be cheaper than chasing a fad.

Like everyone else said, there is NOTHING wrong with a beagle like you describe! Take James' advice and try NKC (Little Pack or Progressive pack) or UKC (Hunting Beagle or Performance Pack). No judge will say your dog is running too much rabbit at those! In fact, he better get with it if he wants to get his share of the action. My beagles are medium to fast medium and they definitely do not have the foot to match some of their competitors. I have never tried PKC but I will take James' word on that - he speaks the TRUTH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Chuck Terry,
Try again, NKC PP will pick up for that in a heart beat. I have seen it done to me and my buddies.

Go to an AKC Midwest trial and see how they run. They can't be too fast if they can run the line. They won't pick you up for speed if he's not cutting, slashing, overrunning. In other words if he runs the line he's fine. wwdorroh

RALPH,,,,,,,,what format you running,,,,running to much rabbit i have heard it all,,,,,,its would be different if you put a lp style dog in a gun brace class then maybe i could see it,,,,,,,i think everyone on this board would much rather see them run to much instead of not enuf,,,,,i would keep your hound sounds like you got a cracker jack there i would find a format to fit the dog,,,,,good luck and keep up the rabbit running

If your dog suits you why would you get rid of him? You may want to go to a different format. Maybe AKC Large Pack or ARHA small pack. If you like the speed of your hounds don't change. Good luck.

Breed some Patch in them, that ought to slow em down a little.

Mr. Pearson,
If your going to run with a group of people that field trial and run a certain format, with certain rules your hound has to fill in all the blanks in between running to much rabbit. If you like what you have keep it and rabbit hunt. If your going to do alot of field trials find the format that your dog best fits in. I don't see many dogs that lap all the other dogs and do it right??? Put that dog where he/she needs to be if it is that good and you will have a blast.
