Looking to add some major speed to my pack through breeding.

I have been pondering the idea of purchasing a dog out of faster lines to add some more speed to my dogs. I like my dogs and they can bring rabbits to the gun all day at a solid medium speed. I dont like wide swinging dogs in my pack even though I enjoy watching them run. I have been thinking about buying a dog that is maybe heavy in Branko breeding or if someone can turn me to something else I will listen. I at this moment have dogs that are Rob's Diamond, BUcks Branch and Playboy breeding and they all have good line control. I want to try to add speed and a little more drive to my dogs and thought if I made the right cross somewhere and culled right that I might get what I want down the road. THis isnt a quick fix idea by no means and I know it will take time and I want to stay with AKC dogs. That may limit me with the faster dogs but I have thought that through many times and decided to stay with AKC dogs. Any help would be great on this, especially experience in doing these type crosses.

OK my two cents worth--HARE HOUNDS are "NOT" i repeat "NOT" fast hounds-from what i have in my kennel nor from what i have seen--they are med fast and stay with a fast pack and up near the front and some are fair at searching and hunting but most like the energy level i look for in a beagle--NOW the ones i have here are in most cases the exception and i plan on them hanging around for a while, but if and when i breed them-if i do-- it will be with a fast hound with lots of extra energy.Soon i will know if i have selected the right male and if not he will stay where he is at-a freind is going to give the male the once over and see him perform and he is less than a year old--"IF" this male i speak of is not worthy i will breed to another in the same kennel==his sire.

I have lines similar to the ones you mentioned and I have tried to add in speed and hunt through breeding. You are right that such a pursuit is not an easy or quick undertaking. I have spent several years and a considerable amount of time, money, and trouble going down that road! I would not recommend going with a really fast hare hound! That would lead to litters that vary too greatly in every respect. I would instead go with a faster cottontail hound with conformation similar to your original line whose breeding has produced dogs with hunt and a fairly amount of line control. I would look closely at the top hounds in the ARHA Progessive Pack Division as potential studs - most of them are AKC registered - just be sure to ask when inquiring. Good luck to you!

I have a real good AKC male that will run as fast as any but will also track a rabbit down a gravel road. He will be 3 years old this summer. The pups he has on the ground are hard hunting and run with style and quickness. He is about 14 inch with good confirmation and tri-color. If you want to see him run come on by. I will stud him out for a very reasonable rate. He is the kind of dog you hear old timers tell stories about.

you probably know this but, here is my two cents. speed doesn't always come from physical ability or confirmation. i have hounds that can outrun others in the pack if they were in an all out foot race, but can't when it comes to running a rabbit. any combination of things can improve speed such as desire, brains, nose, etc. i'm not saying this is what your dogs need, just giving you something to think about.

Speed is one of the easiest things to breed into a hound. Before I got caught up in the hare hound-cottontail hound debate, I would go watch some hounds run that have good qualities about them and that can run a rabbit. I would not just watch that hound once but would go and watch as many times as I possibly could. Also remember this; the pups that come from a fast hound and slow to medium style hounds will not all be fast. Some will be fast and some will be the same speed as the bitch you have or all may be the same speed and get other traits from the male, or vice versa. Its a big step and I would do some heavy duty research and look at all the hounds I could and then narrow them down to the ones that best fit my needs. Jamie Hilbert Kentucky Beagles

Thanks for all the replies. I might have put the wrong word down in my title. I should have said I am looking to add another step or two to my dogs. I dont want to breed to a lightning fast, wide swinging hound that will take the line control away or one that outruns his nose.. I may just do it from within. I have a dog that is young but has some good foot but dont lose the line. I just havent decided yet. I also have young female that gets faster ever time I run her but does not out run her nose. She still has a year of so before I think about breeding her so I have plenty of time. I will research though if I decide to go outside my pens to breed. I have a couple of dogs in mind that I have seen run. Thanks again guys.

I want to try to pursuade you to go Patch. Come get a young hound & take it & run it through the summer with your dogs. See if this is the direction you want to go. You will be under no obligation & won't cost you a dime, just gas to come get her & bring her back. She needs the work & you can get a reading on the actions of a Patch. Has not offered to take trash & head full of sense, all I ask that she not be run with trashy dogs & wears a collar just in case. I am in east Tn.

I thought that was the preferred style. By the way speaking of brace, when I was a teenager a dog trader got one off on me, that gal was great entertainment, she would actually track a Rhode Island Red hen we had all over the yard for hours at a time. Neighbors would come over just to watch. I do have to get the dog back, she is not for sale, I was just letting him get a preview without buying the farm. Kind of a promotional thang.
