We found a really skinny hound the other day while we were out rabbit hunting at a wildlife managment area. This is not a beagle, I think that it is a deer dog, not sure though. This dog was wearing a collar and the guys name and number were on it. We tried to call the guy from teh place and didn't get an answer. We brought the dog home to feed and and continue to try and call the guy. Well, finally that evening I got ahold of the guy. He said that he was going to come that evening and then he never showed up. I called his house back at about 8:30 to see if he was coming and his wife said that he would probably coem the next day. Never came then either. Well, we keep trying to call him, no answer. I got an answer today but when I asked to speak to the guy the girl that answered hung up on me. Originally the guy told me that the dog had been missing the dog for two weeks, so you can imagine hwo skinny this dog is. Has this ever happened to anyone? If so, what did you do?

I think I would find a new home for it or send it down the road. If he came before that I would have to be compensated for the feed and bordering of the dog. One night would be more than enough time to make arrangements to get the dog. He must not care about getting it back.

Thats B.S. I would be calling the law or some other athority. You definitely did the right thing. If the guy doesnt want it he should atleast take it from you and deal with it like a man....thats more than my opinion.. thats a fact..

If you don't have his address go to anywho.com then to reverse look up enter his phone number and see if you can get it that way then take the dog home if it's not to far

Read a story about a guy who called to return a coonhound. The dogs owner had the guy arrersted for stealing his dog. Trying to help the guy out by returning his dog and ended up in a real mess. Be careful with what you do from here since several different people know you have the dog. I usually don't call the law over every little thing but you may need to protect yourserlf at this point. Laws vary by states and can be really strange.

That guy sounds like a real jerk! It would be best if he didn't get the dog back. I would probably just take the dog to the county pound, hopefully he would find a new home.

The same thing happened to me a couple of years ago. When I finally talked to the owner, he said he would get the dog that evening. After about two weeks he finally showed up. I guess he was wanting to go coon hunting again. After experiencing what he done and seeing his personal unkept appearance and his truck half full of loose trash and beer cans I concluded it was just his way of life.

I think I'd let the authorities handle this one...it sounds like he abandoned the dog, but then why would he leave the collar on?

The guy obviously has problems and you DEFINITLY do NOT want to go traipsing over to his shack. What if he is some paranoid meth cooker or something?

CYA and call the cops to come get the dog or at least take a report. JMHO.

had a beagle come to my house tried calling owner for a week finally got someone at 5:30 one morning befor i left to go hunting lady told me that the dog would not stay home an asked if i wanted it so i told her that one more would'nt hurt ,,,so as i loaded my dog's in the box i put the stray in to give her a try,,, the dog hunted an run very well,,, dog stayed at my house never ran away .... a buddy has her today an has never had a problem with her,,,, never could figure out why the lady did'nt want her dog back....worked out good for my buddy !!!!
that was the good story but i have many bad one's as i get every stray in 100 it seem's ...

I would take the dog to the animal shelter tell them the situation and let them handle it. Y

When I lived in Virginia this time of year there would be all kinds of dogs running around. Mostly deer dogs. Virginia too has hunting with deer laws. This time of year a lot of them get dumped or they wonder off and the owners never claim them because either the dog did not do his job or the guy does not want to feed the dog for another year. I know in Virginia there were laws that tried to protect the dogs but nothing really worked. I think this is the thing in this case too, for what ever reason this jerk does not want his dog back. Do the dog a favor and find him another home, or buy him a .22 to heaven I think in either case he will be much better off.

I would feed it, worm it, and keep it long enough for me to decide if I thought the guy wasn't coming. After that I would treat it like it was my own. It wouldn't break me to have to kennel a dog for a week or two.
I would love to have a deer dog to break rabbit dogs.

If I had to get rid of the dog, I would ask the guy where he lives and drop it off in his yard. I am not too worried about parnoid meth cookers. I am pretty confident that I can handle about any situation that would come up.

think i would feed that poor dog for a while. i wouldn't give it back at all. dont waste your time messin with that guy,what for? be careful where you kennel that dog no telling what it may have as far as diseases? you can get a bottle of penicillin at the farm store. might save you some trouble. they also carry zivermectin, a horse wormer that can be used on dogs. so for 20.00 and a bag of feed you can do this guy a favor and bring him back to health. had it happen to me before. i think its part of your duty as a beagler to help this dog. god has a funny way of doing things sometimes.

Deer hunters that run dogs on deer have a terrible reputation for not taking care of their dogs. It is pretty sad and disgusting. I'm not saying all of them don't, but there are enough out there to give deer dog hunters a bad name. I've heard about deer runners that go to the dog pounds just before season opens and get anything that looks like it will run a deer and then at the end of the hunt or season just leave them out. Additionally deer run so far that often collecting the dogs over miles is more of a chore than they care to do. I'd say this isn't the first dog this guy has been missing.

I'd say most any of us, if we had been missing a beagle for two weeks would be jumping in the truck the minute we got the phone call that they dog had been found.

I agree Briarhoppers, that is what has sonfused me. If I was missing a beagle, or any dog I own for that matter, and someone called and said they had found it I would headed their way within minutes of the phone call.

We do still have the dog. He is getting a nice meal a few times a day. He is not being housed with any of our dogs. We have 2 dog lines at our house, not located anywhere near our kennels that he has been on. This gives him about 65-70 feet to move on. He also has a dog house, clean water and fresh food. A lot more than he had a few days ago.

SilverZuk, I hadn't thought about the benefit of having a deer dog to break rabbit dogs. I had thought about it previously but not recently.
