SKUNK!!!!!
Well guys i had a first tonight. Me and Robbie Jeffries (a.k.a. muscles) were running dogs. We had just cut loose and put the dogs in a nice thicket. When a big turkey flew up. One of my young females barked a few times chasing the turkey by sight, not to bad, but i bumped her with the collar anyway. Then another one of my dogs opened like he was tearin up jack. Robbie went running over to see if they were still messin with the turkey or what, he didnt get half way, and i seen him cover his mouth and nose, turn around and come tearing out of the thicket..hollering SKUNK!!!! I looked in the thicket and my Scooter dog had it in his mouth. THe skunk sprayed him, and then he attacked the skunk and killed it. He started to bring it out to me until i layed on the good ol tritronics. He dropped it quick. Needless to say, i think im gonna have to bury him alive just so i can go out my back door. I had to tie him out in the back of the truck on the way home..and could still smell him going 60 mph down the highway...
Im tellin ya...I have the best luck in the world..
just thought i would share with you all...maybe make you feel good about a bad day of running dogs...cant get much worse than that.

oh man the skunk stories.
several years ago me and a buddy were running dogs and it got real late at night so we started catching dogs. they were coming in as a pack and you could smell them from a mile away. we started picking up dogs and puting in the box trying to figure out who the culprit was and it turned out to be his dog. I stood up and walked away said buddy you need to put your own dog in the box...lol
another time was on a pond dam with a young gamey dog. briars real thick below me where the dogs were hunting. young dog opened up and i thought wow hes going to jump a rabbit. the briars started shaking and out popped a skunk about a foot from me. it stood staring at me and i ever slow slowly started backing up. thank god it didnt get me and thank god that hound didnt give it a try...lol

My buddy and I hunted with a land owner one day and at the end of the day I saw a young dog look hot near a log pile and dove in only to start yelping and backing out. The smell hit me right then. I radioed to my buddy and told him what his dog had discovered. The land owner said he had seen the skunk before and wanted to get rid of it. I pointed out the location under the log pile and he shot it. I thought that was the end of that, but the guy surprised me and said "How are we going to get it out of there ?". I told him that " You are on your own". He showed up at the truck a few minutes later with his prize an asked "How much do you think it would cost to get it mounted ?". With out even hesitating my buddy said "Maybe you should get an estimate first.". When you smell one going down the road they stink, but when you smell one up close it will take your breath away. That dog smelled bad for months.
Where's the earth shattering kaboom ?

MONTHS....thats real assuring. I have always heard the stories about skunks...but to see a dog with it in his mouth shaking it through the air is another... He didnt just get sprayed...he tried to eat it i think. I dont know what to do, i about gagged trying to feed the stupid thing tonight. Maybe i need to shave him,,,LOL...
one thing about it. I dont think i have to worry about anything woopin him. If he's crazy enough to go after a skunk after it sprays him, he's crazy enough to do about anything. ...Wish me luck with the smell..

Sure is funny sitting here not smellin it!!! LOL We have many of these nasty creatures here and I have had to bath many a skunked dog. Here is the best remedy.. and its cheap and easy to use.
Next go to a drug store and get the following:
1 quart (or liter) of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, H2O2.
Use fresh (unopened) hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Hydrogen peroxide eventually turns into water (H2O).
1/4 cup (50 ml.) of Baking Soda
1 teaspoon (5 ml.) of Liquid Soap (Dawn)
1 pair of plastic or latex gloves
Leah...still LOL from the first post!!!!
You are right Tiffini its DAWN not Palmolive ;-) When I did the post I couldn't remember!!!

Happens with young coonhounds fairly regularly, or at least it did when I coon hunted. The skunk was probably looking for turkey eggs, a delicacy to skunks. BTW, last year one of my hounds flushed a big hen turkey and started busting through the brush and I started hearing strange bird sounds. When I caught him he had a baby turkey in his mouth about the size of doubled fists. Anyone ever had that happen before? I felt really bad about it, and snapped all the hounds, knowing the weeds were full of baby turkeys, and led the hounds about 150 yards away and put them over a hillside.

Two of our house dogs got sprayed by a skunk in the backyard and they got to spend a night outside in the kennel. I called the vet the following morning and they said:
1 bottle of Dawn dish soap (the small one...but make sure it is Dawn)
1 bottle of vinegar
1 big can of tomato juice
put the tomato juice, then vinegar and then the bottle of Dawn on the dog. then rinse. DO NOT rinse in between ingredients.
Good luck!

Tough luck!
I thought I was about to have that happen about a month ago. Dog acted real gamey at a wood pile, I was about fifty yards away. All I could see was the white tip of its tail waddling up the creek bed. Called the dog off when she started to follow in the same direction. Kept on running in the same spot just watched real close. Figure if its gonna happen, its gonna happen nomatter what. Dog goes into a brush pile, theres an aweful rukus. I started yelling NOOOO! Just about ready to hit the buzzer, when I saw MR. cottontail run for his life. I kissed my dog after that one!
WindKist has the right potion. That'll work on just about any natural stink. Its published in a book, suposedly a chemical engineer came up with it.

Yeah my dogs attacked one the other day. I think the skunk might have been sick or something. He did not spray or even try to run away. I did not have my e collars on the dogs. I did not want to get to close to the thing and have it spray me. Lucky i was able to call them off. If you want to hear a funny shunk story ask coolbrze... not his brightest moment.

Leahs recipe truly does work. Though I found Dawn is more effective then the Palmolive. The only thing I add, is I give them a dog coat conditioner afterward cause the dawn can irritate their skin, Besides, a little extra smell sweetener never hurts!!
LOL
My best skunk story, my nephew and his buddy decided they were going to get rid of the skunk that had taken up residense in the car lean too across the creek from the house. The laid in wait after dark to ambush it. Imagine 2 15 year old boys hatching this plan. WEll, it ambled out for its nightly forage, got about 10 ft away from them and they shot it with..... a shotgun.
The odor was horrific, insantly spread in a cloud.
At this point my Sister and BIL said you boys HAVE to get rid of it!!! Which they did (gagging and choking) then came to the back door, stripped outside then showered forever.
The next day in school my nephew was sitting in class, turned to his buddy behind him and said. darn, must still be in my nose the smell of it is still killing me. Looked down and realized his buddy wore the same sneakers to school!!!!!!!!

We moved into skunk country with a 6 year old boston terrier and a 2 year old mut named "friend"
I was laying in bed, getting ready to get up to go to work.
I hear my wife let the BT outside, and then open up the sliding glass door in the kitchen a little while later to let him.
As soon as the door opened, I hear "OOOOH, friend got sprayed by a skunk".
I hear the pitter patter of little boston terrier feet coming down the hall.
As he is jumping into the bed, I could smell it.
He started running around circles in the bed with his head down and rolling on the covers trying to wipe the skunk spray off.
I don't think skunk smell ever goes away in the house. I think after a few months you just get used to it where you can't smell it anymore.
I had a male beagle that got sprayed a couple times a year, and didn't seem to effect him one bit. I don't know how he could run rabbits with that smell on him, but he could.
